Neither was little johnny. After what Sutter did with the tiny one just imagine what he could do with Nylander. Sure it'd be a bit of a gamble, but a worthwhile one.

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Coleman
Nylander - Kadri - Mangiapane

It's not a gamble IMO. Bottom end you get a 70-80 point player that only plays half the ice. Top end you get a 90-100 point player that Sutter beats into a responsible 200 ft guy (would probably take a miracle).
Leafs get a 30 year old guy who's never cracked 60 points, a promising young Dman that might turn into nothing and a late second a couple years from now.

Leafs are better off keeping Nylander, signing Sandin (who at least has more NHL experience) and finding toughness in a million dollar 3rd liner.

It's worthwhile for the Flames for sure. Not so much for the Leafs

That's pretty much what everyone (including me) said about little johnny yet Sutter did work a miracle with him. What makes it a -BIT- of a gamble is if Sutter can do something similar with Nylander. If anyone can make Nylander a more responsible 200 foot player it's Daryll Sutter.

Yes Nylander is younger, I'll add he's faster and is more skilled too. Toffoli on the other hand costs a lot less and IS defensively responsible. Plus the Leafs would be getting a defensive prospect who's bigger, has a higher ceiling than Sandin, is already signed for quite a bit less than Sandin wants and would make the roster in Toronto. In addition the Leafs save ~1 mil in cap and get a pick too.

There are other options for adds but that's the one I felt made the most sense for the Leafs. Kylington instead of Valimaki for one but that wouldn't save the Leafs much cap space at all and the Flames wouldn't be adding a pick in that case either. Kylington is better than Sandin and is already signed for less than Sandin is asking for.

We're going to have to agree to differ n the Sandin vs Valimaki front. I fell Sandin has a higher ceiling, and his contract will come in lower than Valimaki and much lower than . It seems the issue for him is playing time / positioning.

Regarding Sutter...........that guy could turn a Letterkenny Skid into a strapping Hick farmboy in less than 3 months..........

Valimaki's contract is 1.55 mil. Toronto is said to have offered Sandin at least 2.5 mil but he wants more. Kylington is already signed for 2 years at 2.5 mil.

Edit: I just realized Sandin is asking for 2.8 mil + for 2 years not 2.8+ per year. That does make a difference, Valimaki wouldn't save the Leafs any money after all. So yeah, Toronto declines. smile

Sandin wants the same as Liljegren just got. I do see him signing for $1.4mil x 2yrs; certainly no less than $1.25mil/yr anyways

Nylander would likely cost Toffoli + Dube and that's not something I'd really want to entertain unless Liljegren was coming back to be our Future Tanev replacement as part of the Trade Package (CGY'd have to add for him of course). I'm actually getting very interested in seeing how Meloche plays with the Flames though

TOR probably does a deal with CHI sending Nylander + Kerfoot + a Pick for Kane 50% retained
