A rebuilding team like Anaheim expending a high second-round draft pick on a 33-year-old rental third liner?

I don't think so.

I think you got the picks reversed there bud.

If you need to clear cap space we will take Zacha or DeBrusk off you hands, probably would even pay for them too.

Imagine thinking a guy whose played a 40pt pace over the last 3 years and a $3.1 million cap hit is a cap dump. I swear most people on this site just spew their opinion without doing an research.

BOS shouldn't make this trade, it just makes their bot6 weaker. If you want to make cap space just send Foligno to the minors and move Nosek

While acquiring Smith makes absolutely no sense for Anaheim, Smith is about as far from a cap dump as it gets.

You say that like 1 year of 40 pts is going to be worth a 2nd round pick to a rebuilding team that is going to miss the playoffs with or without him. He doesn't fit our rebuild timeline, we have plenty of young middle six players to give ice time too, and we wouldn't be resigning him. He is way more valuable on Boston's roster than he is on Anaheim's.

Now what was that about not doing any research?

A “cap dump,” is player with a contract that is negative value.

Valuable players are traded to make cap room all the time.

Does it make sense for Anaheim to acquire a 33 year old winger at the expense of a valuable pick when they are in a rebuild?

Craig smith has played at a 22 goal, 43 pace over the last five seasons with a very responsible, gritty two way game. At 3.1M, that’s just not anywhere near a negative value asset. I don’t think he would get a 2nd in this particular draft, but the narrative that he’s somehow a cap dump all comes from some reporter known for being correct roughly 0% of the time theorizing that the Bruins want to move him.

I honestly have no idea which reporter you were referring to, I don't tend to follow much hockey news outside of THG. I was merely taking a swipe back at ON3M4N for calling us Ducks fans uninformed on the subject when he was displaying the same lack or research he is accusing us of. As good of a player as Smith may be, he would still have negative value to the Ducks because he is taking up a roster spot from a kid we NEED to develop. His 20+ goals and 40+ points for one season do nothing to help our rebuild along. There are probably 24+ other teams in the league who would happily pay you for him, but we are not amongst that group. Any positive value he would hold to my team is whatever we would be able to flip him for at the deadline, and there are risks involved with us for that, such as his numbers declining in Anaheim or him getting hurt before we can trade him.

We get bombarded over here in ANA by ACGMs who see our cap space as free to use and not understanding, or caring that rebuilding teams don't spend draft capital on aging rentals, no matter how good they are. Our assumption at this point is anyone over the age of 30 on an expiring deal worth multiple millions of dollars is coming to us because they are cap dump, whether they are worth their pay or not.

I said he's played at a 40pt pace over the last 3yrs lol. Just because he doesn't fit your teams timeline doesn't mean he's a cap, it's just not the right fit.

Likely not, but that's doesn't make him a cap dump. It just means ANH isn't the right fit if Boston decided to trade Smith.

It only ‘doesn’t make sense’ to Anaheim fans. When their rebuild is complete in 2 years, he’ll be done that contract. I only chose them because they weren’t ‘swimming’ in right wingers.

I’m not an anaheim fan, and it doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t see any argument for it making sense. It’s a bad trade concept in terms of the team you selected to move craig smith too. What they’re saying is crazy as well.

The trade may not work for Anaheim, but Craig Smith isnt a cap dump. I feel like every player over 30 now is just considered wrongly as a cap dump. 3.1mil 1 year left for a guy who had 16 goals last year (and thats a down year) come on man.

Hes probably worth a 3rd.
