yeah, leafs totally should have signed a 32 year old goalie to a 5 year deal and made their forward core significantly worse, especially signing a guy who is not only worse at hockey than kerfoot but isnt physical at all in max domi. That dude dodges more hits than pretty much every NHLer and throws even less

Is toughness really the issue?????????????????????????????

Game 7's
2019 first round: Bruins 5, Maple Leafs 1
2020 qualifying round: Blue Jackets 3, Maple Leafs 0
2021 first round: Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 1
2022 first round: Tampa Bay 2, Maple Leafs 1

Power Play (0 PPG in any game 7)

I will never understand this lack of toughness thought process. They need more scoring.

A team that scored goals left and right needs more scoring? Ya that makes sense. Scoring is the only reason we even have a playoff team. Now the goaltending took a major dip with that idiotic move to bring in a washed up goalie. We need defence not scoring

This website is free and yet reading this post still felt like a waste of money.

Despite removing all restrictions and using magical thinking, you've still managed to make a worse team than the one we currently have.

shakes head

Look at the series goal totals; and then compared to other playoff series...goal scoring is not the problem. Shutting down the opposition is. You can't let another team score 3+ goals in the playoffs, it's that simple. Analytics over the recent years in the playoffs point to this; it's simply a recipe for disaster yet the Leafs allowed 8 more goals then the Avs did against Tampa as a prime example and yet only scored 1 less goal then the Avs in the first 6 games of the series...it's clear as day the problem.

Our defense is very good, and while our offense is also very good it's heavily centred on the first two lines. Improving the offensive usefulness of the fourth line especially would go a long way. It makes us harder to line-match against in the playoffs when our bottom six can win their matchups.

Our goaltending was terrible for most of last season. I don't necessarily think Murray or Samsonov will be great but expect them to break even at least.

In the playoffs, the Leafs’ bottom six – which included some combination of Ilya Mikheyev, Pierre Engvall, David Kampf, Ondrej Kase, Colin Blackwell, Jason Spezza, Kyle Clifford, and Wayne Simmonds – combined for three goals, and Mikheyev scored two empty netters. By comparison, Tampa Bay’s bottom six of Ross Colton, Nick Paul, Branden Hagel, Corey Perry, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, and Patrick Maroon combined for 10 goals (no empty netters). However we slice it, the gap in depth scoring was significant.

In the playoff previous, the Leafs’ bottom six contributed four goals – Jason Spezza scored three of them, and one came when he moved into the top six. Joe Thornton scored the other on the power play. In the year before against Columbus, the only bottom-six forward (in terms of time on ice) to score at all was Nick Robertson.

This has been a consistent problem for three years running under this management regime. The difference this past playoff is that the top forwards were full marks for producing. While we hear all the time that a team lives and dies by its stars – which is largely true – when the gap is this tight between top teams, every single player matters.

In previous years, the Leafs loaded the first line with ice time – because they had nothing in the bottom six – and it gassed their top players. This year, they did have some substance in the bottom six – specifically, the third line was legitimately solid – but they weren’t able to provide much offensively. The fourth line was generally a nonfactor outside of taking penalties.

Edit:
But yes, lets add more toughness

lol, no, they lost because they havent scored in critical times, the leafs have never had an issue shutting other teams down.
Goals per game vs Tampa for Colorado 3.33
Goals per game vs Tampa for Toronto 3.43
Goals against per game vs Tampa for Colorado 2.5
Goals agains per game vs Tampa for Toronto 3.3

Less than a goal per game extra against. That is literally nothing over a 6 or 7 game sample. It's the difference between one bad game either way

This team is fractionally better in the playoffs than the current one.

Clifford and Simmonds are barely NHLers. Not sure why you don't like Engvall. Not going to get into Tavares-Kadri-Kerfoot revisionism but you absolutely do not want to give Kadri 7 x 7.

Jack was anything but terrible. I honestly don’t know what you people watch. We were 18th in goals allowed last season and 2nd in goals scored. We have the best goal scorer in the game. We don’t have a problem scoring

I mean, they have the scoring. They have elite talent up front in Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander. Plus they have Rielly. And obviously in the regular season they are among the top of the league in scoring. They just need to learn how to getter done in the playoffs. As much as it sucks, I don’t think there’s really anything Dubas can do to fix it (maybe adding cup winning experience in Bozak and Kessel would help lol). It just has to be the stars finally coming out and slaying the dragon that is game 7.

Engvall doesn’t do anything of note to be worth 2 million dollars in this flat cap era. Jarnkrok is a better player and he makes slightly less. I’m fine with paying Kadri to retire a Leaf. I’d rather have him than Tavares any day. I’m sure Colorado is pretty happy they did that trade

Also depth scoring has been the death of this team in the playoffs, but personally I'd rely on prospects to fill the gaps.

Worse than who? Murray? Because that crazy talk bud. Murray is down right awful. If he was remotely useful he’d still be in Pittsburgh
