Description
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Topi Niemela who is a right handed defenceman with star potentIal in the NHL.

The only way to obtain a right hand defenceman with star potential in the NHL is to draft and develope the player which is what the Leafs are doing with Topi Niemela.

Kyle Dubas and the Leafs hit an absolute home run when they drafted Topi Niemela in the third round and 64th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and he is proving to be one of the Leafs most exciting prospects with star potential.

He put on an absolute clinic at the 2021 World Juniors and took home the Best Defenseman Award which caught the attention of the hockey world and just put up a great year playing for Karpat in the Finnish League where he had 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in only 48 games.

He has the ability to accelerate at high speeds, moving both forward and backwards and plays a positionally sound defensive game with high hockey IQ and competent stick handling skills.

He looks like a future top-four defenceman for the Maple Leafs with tremendous power play and penality kill abilities and may arrive in North America next spring in time for the NHL playoffs playoffs to bolster the Leafs.

Should probably have patience for a few weeks until the WJC goes to start declaring Niemala ready. I guess we'll be spammed with them then so you can at least say you were ahead of the tide.

He's got a series going. Each new post features one of Toronto's players with a grand spectacle of a write up. Then he puts a bunch of nonsense and wraps it up with a bow. Occasionally he has a side series that features the worst trades on CF with eloquent descriptions as to why hockey only happens in Toronto. He will also recommend listening to "Toronto sports media" or say you've been listening to it too much, I can't remember that part.

You do realize that he has a Cap Salary of $3,500,000 but only needs to be paid $750,000 which is very attractive for a team like the Ducks who still need to ice a team and get to the floor of the Cap and then can turn around and trade him for a 2nd round pick at the trade deadline.

Put me down as one who doesn't have great faith in "stats" of what a player does in junior, any European league, NCAA or even the AHL. It's such a big step to the NHL. We have seen thousands of sure fire youngsters never make to the NHL during the past 100 years.
As a Leaf fan I hope you're right about Niemela, and I certainly wish the young man all the success. But let see how performs in the AHL before this talk about him being a top four Dman in the NHL.

Assuming both Anaheim and where we want to trade him are not on his no trade list, and assuming that he can maintain point pace in Anaheim (pro tip, he won't) he's a 30 points scorer who got an extra 20 assists last year because he was on a line with Tavares and Nylander.

He's a middle 6 rental who had an amazing year because of his line mates, not his ability. Anaheim's not paying for him.

He did put up 43 and 43 points on the Avs before he was traded to the Leafs so I think he has much more ability than you are giving him credit.

Maybe he breaks 40 points on the Ducks. Maybe we can get a 2023 second for him as a rental. Definitely Toronto doesn't have the leverage to get a high 2024 4th for him from a team that has no incentive to take him on outside the picks we get with him. He could get injured, he could need a surgery, all of which we have given up a pic for a year of a guy who we know walks at seasons end.

Risk reward isn't there for Anaheim. Best I can do is future considerations.

I think you are right in the current Flat Cap World of the NHL has driven down the value of players like Kerfoot and maybe Leafs can't really expect much back for him at all in a trade with the Ducks even though he is still a good player.

Leafs need to reduce Cap so they are motivated to move Kerfoot if necessary unless Muzzen can be put back on LTIR.

It is definitely wacky times in the NHL. Could be worse, at least you're not Vegas and having to ship off your leading scorer with a prospect just to shed cap.

While I am not sure if the flat cap these last few years is good for the game, it has certainly been entertaining to watch the gymnastics GMs have to do in order to stay cap compliant.

I think the FlatCap is really damaging to the well managed teams in being able to keep their team's together and driving down the contract salaries of the 3rd and 4th line players in the National Hockey League.
