Description
With gaudreau/tkachuk now off the table it doesnt seem like there are any more elite Ws to grab for this season. That said we desperately need exactly that and i really really dont want kadri for anything more than 4×6 (which he will get just hopefully not from us). However there is another top ufa that just might be able to help. This is certainly not an ideal situation but with an aging roster wasting a season looking for that winger isnt a viable option imo.
It might not be a 1 for 1 dont get hung up on value unless you think theres a big difference between them.

Lmfao Kyle Connor is one of the leagues best goal scorers, signed on a good contract for awhile and just scored 47 goals last year. And you think you can get him for a defender who has 1 good year to his name?

Islanders need to stay the course, and here is why:

1. Sorokin IS the goalie and he is young enough to be just that for close to the next decade.

2. The blueine. The top 4 of Pelech, Pullock, Romanov and Dobson are fantastic, and all under 30. Fair to say that those 4 are the defensive core for the next 6 seasons.... which in the meantime, others are likely to comes along (Aho, Bolduc?)

The Islanders ate built from the net out. I agree, outside of Barzal, Wahlstrom and Beauvillier foward core is very long in the tooth, but I think they need to pick there spots here. The contracts ate not great, in fact difficult to move. So using draft capital to fill out the forward lines is perhaps the best direction.

All I can say is this team reminds me of the Devil prior to the cup runs. Goaltending set. Blueline set. Some smart drafting and the Holik and Arnott deals, and they took off.

Islanders shouldn’t be rushing to make any big changes like this. Jets decline the deal anyways, would take much more than what NYI would want to pay to get Connor.

They need to compete now before everyone gets too old. Outside of raty theres nobody in the system that projects as anything more than a 3rd liner. Waiting for draft picks to hit means even if we nail the 23 1st rounder youre still talking about 4 years minimum until they become a solid contributor. By that time the F core will be ancient, pulock and pelech will be hitting 30 and the roster will be in shambles.

Personally I wouldn’t trade Dobson. He’s too important to their blue line and it would be impossible to replace him. Like Connor would give Barzal an elite winger, but it doesn’t help that much if it comes at the expense of their best puck moving defenseman. It’s also worth mentioning Klingberg has entered a steep decline in play over the past few years.

That’s just a terrible take lol. Elite Defenseman can be effective into their mid to late thirties and I don’t think there’s any other way to describe Pelech and Pulock. They r the exception to the norm.

The right deal can fall on Lou's lap, the right UFA. Too much money tied up in aging forwards.

But moving off that blueline to fix that issue would be a mistake. Feeding Peter to save Paul.

You can find young talent outside of the draft. Isles made several hires to help in that department this past off season. Meanwhile their late round picks in recent years have been very solid. Not only are you wrong about their system but you are also wrong that they r in win now mode. They aren’t gonna fall apart in 3 years bro. In 3 years almost all the bad salary will be gone Lmao.

Yeah people don’t realize how important Dobson is to their future. It’s kind of ridiculous tbh. The core group is Barzal, the top four defenseman and Sorokin. Those guys have a very long window of opportunity to compete for a championship.

Klingberg is still a very good player. Youre acting as if i destroyed the blue line 3-6 romanov-klingberg is a very respectable top 4.

Moving a 22 year old Dobson to replace with a 29 year old Kilingberg is nuts. Full stop.

Not about ability (about equal at this stage of the game), about having a core 4 on the blueline for 6-8 years. Stabile bluelines that are THAT good are how Cups are won.

If we wait for the 23 1st to be that elite winger, the average age of the team will be like 30. I also never said pelech and pulock wouldnt be effective. The only thing i said about them is that in 4 years theyll have both hit 30yo which is 100% true.

What is your point? Letang is 36 and plays and elite game still. Duncan Keith was 100% effective in his mid 30s. Nick Lidstrom was a force until he retired. Chris Chelios was an NHL defenseman until he was damn near 50.

So, again, your point of them being 30?

Another terrible take. Being 30 doesn’t mean you are washed and they don’t have to wait that long to add an elite wing. They have a legit top line forward prospect in Raty and two guys with upside in Dufour and Holmstrom. That being said they can still make a trade for an elite winger without moving Dobson. This post makes no sense bud.

Via the athletic

2. John Klingberg, Stars

There are next to no valuable defenders on the free agency board this summer and that should mean John Klingberg cashes in. He’s one of the league’s best offensive defenceman, drives play well in the fun zone and scores a lot of points. Those are the type of defensemen who usually get paid handsomely. They’re also the type that tend to burn teams who focus too much on the point totals and not the rest of their game.

In Klingberg’s case, his game has fallen off hard in recent seasons with last year’s 0.9-win pace representing a new low. That’s just under top pair territory and explains his low projected GSVA of just 1.2 wins. At that rate, he’s worth just $5.6 million which is well short of the projected $6.9 million he’s expected to net over seven years. Not nice.

The problem with Klingberg is his defense and last year was especially bad in that regard. The Stars allowed 0.35 more expected goals against per 60 with Klingberg on the ice compared to off the ice last season and a lot of those ended up in the back of the net. For three straight seasons, the Stars have performed better with Klingberg on the bench and he’s been outscored every season. His actual expected goals percentage is above 50 percent each year, but only modestly so. Klingberg’s value has tanked every year as a result and he’s a long way removed from his peak. His trajectory is a straight slide down where living up to a near $7 million deal gets tougher and tougher each year. His comparables being a number of past-their-prime sheltered power play quarterbacks is especially worrying. The presence of Keith Yandle as the top comp screams buyer beware.

With that being said, it’s possible that a better fit might cure what ails Klingberg. The talent is immense, he has more experience playing tougher minutes than many of his comps did and his decline coincided with a coach who didn’t exactly mesh with Klingberg’s ideal style of play. In a different system, there’s a chance he can thrive as he remains one of the league’s absolute best puck-movers in all three zones. His play without the puck is a red flag, but he’s shown in the past he can make up for it. It’s not too late to regain that form, though I’d still be very wary of a long-term commitment.

No. Your assuming the window is open.

This team is building, not competing for a Cup.

My point is the Islander have boxes checked off in very key spots. Built from the net out. The forward core as it is, maybe gets out of round 1, but the Rangers and Canes are different beasts. And let's say they pull off an upset. Then what? The Cats, Lightening or Leafs?

THEY 👏 ARE 👏 BUILDING👏
