Description
Middleton contract is using Lauzon's 4 year, $8M contract as a comparable.

I do not believe the Wild will acquire Miller and instead intend on building through the draft, but adding Miller to replace Fiala makes this team better than last year. Our beat writer mentioned in a podcast that he wouldn't be surprised if Guerin has another move up his sleeve to get better up front. This is purely speculation of course, but he usually doesn't say stuff like that without knowing more than he is letting on. We were also reportedly in on Miller prior to the deadline and with Miller's low cap hit he makes a lot of sense as a trade Target. Guerin and Rutherford also have a great relationship.

We could stomach an extension for Miller if we let Dumba walk next offseason, which isn't incomprehensible after acquiring Faber. This trade is purely for Miller as a rental, but the possibility of an extension is there.

Don't see Minnesota doing this. They just dealt Fiala because they can't afford him, why would they acquire Miller who they also can't afford next year, for more than they were paid for Fiala?

Not sure Van would take this. The value is pretty good but if Van doesn’t get a top 5 pick they probably want a young player with real potential to be an impact player and neither jost or Addison has enough of that at this point

Please read my description. The problem for Fiala was this year with Dumba under contract. Next year is not an issue if we let him walk. I'm also not acquiring him with an extension here.

I think that's fair. Problem is there are so many good forwards potentially available so I'm not sure if anyone will bite on that price. I also don't think teams would give that type of asset up for a rental. I modeled the trade around what Duchene got when Columbus acquired him and added a bit since Miller is better than Duchene was at the time of that trade.

If Miller gets traded it is highly likely a extension is in place, which just further increases his value.

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't really matter - this trade was made for Miller as a rental.

Frank seravalli said today he sees no reason why 2nd overall couldn’t be part of a return for miller if he went to jersey so I’d say some teams are willing to offer that and with the number of teams interested it creates a bidding war which only drives his price up

I did read your description. There's no reason for Minnesota to pay way more for a single year of the older Miller than what they got for the younger Fiala. Just doesn't make sense.

It’s been reported by Elliote Friedman that Miller very likely fetched a better return than Fiala. Doesn’t mean it will be Minnesota will be acquiring him, but it just means that Miller has higher value

I know, Canucks expect a return of a 1st + U23 roster player + high quality prospect.

I was saying that the Wild shouldn't wouldn't pay that, it doesn't make sense for them.

I could see us doing this. It makes the whole lineup better in a way that Fiala wouldn't simply because Miller is a C.

Would we have space to sign him for 7-8M AAV on an extension? Even with letting Dumba walk and Wallstedt at G2 in 2023, we still need to sign Boldy and Rossi to extensions within the cap crunch timeframe.

I think Miller is just an objectively better player than Fiala (particularly in the playoffs), period, so aside from the positional value this would be a better roster, in my opinion.

We have about $20M in space next offseason with this trade. Say Miller gets $8M, that leaves $12M remaining. Russo's article today mentioned a possible bridge deal for Body around 2-3 years at $3-3.5M AAV. It was complete speculation, but let's say he's right and Boldy signs a 3 year, $3.5M AAV contract which leaves us $8.5M. Rossi is on his ELC for 3 more seasons including next and we are essentially free from any cap penalties due to Parise/Suter by the time his extension would kick in. For simplicity, I'll count ELC deals as $1M, so that's Rossi, Faber, and Wallstedt leaving us with $5.5M in cap space to re-sign/replace Gaudreau, Duhaime, Talbot, Kulikov, and a depth forward. I think all of those guys you could re-sign/replace with players around $1M AAV. There's probably an extra $500K or so due to my rounding on ELC's - either way it's tight, but doable.

You're definitely right on the ELCs. I forgot that Rossi will be on ELC so long. Also there's Beckman who could come up in 23 and make another ELC during the crunch.

Also signing Flower at 3.5Mx2 means that he could have Talbot's contract slot in 23 and not disrupt the plan. If Wallstedt is ready for G2 duties in 23, now we're talking!

Maybe this isn't as dire as I thought? I mean I knew we'd navigate it, but I didn't expect to be this hopeful about our chances.

As long as we let Dumba walk in the offseason (or he re-signs for less than he makes now), we are just fine on cap space. I like Dumba a lot, think he's a great guy for the locker room, does a ton for the community, and he plays tough minutes for us but he also is prone to dumb mistakes and he hasn't been the same offensively since tearing his pec so frankly if he wants $6M+ AAV again, I'd let him walk.

I expect Dumba to be a 4Mx3 guy. Give him a chance to get his offense back on track as he's gets into his 30s. I think he'd take it. He loves it here and GMBG loves him.
