Description
#1 pick: Shane Wright. Lock it up. Slam dunk done deal.

If Slafkosky is NOT drafted by NJ, then I try to pull off the following moves to get pick #3 from ARZ.

FIRST: Jeff Petry and 50% retained salary to NYI for pick #13.
SECOND: trade picks #13, #26, & #33 to ARZ for #3.

I’ve watched him play dude. He’s good, but he’s a 34 year old righty d man with a big cap hit. He isn’t gonna have high trade value.

10 western conference GMs were polled by Lebrun in the Athletic in January (maybe February I have a stoner memory and can't fully remember) and all 10 said he still had value, that was before he started playing back to his normal level.

I see why fans outside MTL don't see value in him because of his age and cap hit but as far as actual play he likely becomes the top pairing Dman on just about any team he gets dealt to. Its hard to believe MTL will give him away for peanuts just to watch him be successful in a top pairing or even top 4 role somewhere else.

30 games doesn't dictate a players value, GMs are smart enough to look at his play for the last couple years and know they're getting a solid 23 minute a night guy

Quoting: Subbanator7667
and then finished the season with 21 points in 29 games.

So you're saying that his bad 30 games shouldn't dictate his value, but his good 30 games should?

GMs will understand a rough start to a season when you're 26, sure. But when you're asking a GM to take on the age-35 through -37 seasons of a guy with, at best, a $3.125M cap hit, a slow start is going to be an enormous red flag. Just because he had a good stretch by the time the team was all but eliminated from contention isn't going to make that go away.

I literally said YEARS in the post. There's no indication that he is regressing unless you Soley focus on those 30 games, the past 4 years has shown nothing but improvement until that slow start and then after that slow start he was back to his normal self.

Ya I'm not delusional to think he is getting 13th overall but if Hughes can get a first for Ben Chairot then he is going to get good value for Petry lol

Fair enough lol. Just don’t c him fetching a first unless ur taking back something bad. Canadians may be better off keeping him tbh.

But that's my point - he turned 34 during last season, he has a ton of miles on him at this point (800+ career games), and he's being paid a ton of money. Whether you think it's fair or not, a slow start at 34 is going to be much more detrimental to a player's value than a slow start for a 24 year old - he's clearly in his decline years and a good stretch at the end of the year, when the games clearly didn't matter, isn't going to erase the fact that he had 6 total points in his first 40 games (when the games were theoretically more important.)

Petry isn’t worth 13OA even at half retained

I'd agree if Lebrun didn't poll GMs in January and have all of them say he still has value. And that was before he came back to his normal self. Point is that he is still a reliable top 4 dman and until proven otherwise he is going to get a positive return in a trade. I get the skeptic view point of fans but if a GM is desperate to fill a top 4 RHD role and miss out on Letang or Klingberg then Petry is likely Thier best option

You're right in that we likely either retain or take a bad contract back but they need to move Petry and I say that mostly because I want them to compete for Bedard and Petry playing like he normally does makes that lottery win less likely lol

as everyone’s already said the islanders are just not a fit for petry. RD is maybe the only position they need really no help at

Not saying he has no value; just saying I don't think he has lottery pick value, even with retention.

Ow ya he isn't getting a top 15 pick, but I also saw Hughes get a first rounder for Chairot. That return gives me hope that he gets that value for Petry to

Because we saw a worst dman in Risto go for 13th overall last year. Why not have hope

Yeah but risto always had this reputation of being good just on a bad sabres team (fair or not he had that rep) petry is worth nowhere near that plus it makes even less sense for nyi to do it as theyre so strong at RD
