A Miller trade that actually makes sense for both teams

Description
This could be a realistic trade that could happen if the Jackets were interested in Miller. Most trades that involve Miller seem to miss the fact that 2022 picks would not be involved if signing an extension is required. He cannot legally negotiate a new contract until the start of FA which is after the 2022 draft. So, all picks that would be a part of this trade would be for at least 2023 or 2024.

Johnson will start the year in AHL Cleveland. Jarmo is determined to turn him into a center. Cleveland would be the right place for that as he could get tons of ice time to try and make that transition. Marchenko also starts in Cleveland due to inexperience on smaller ice and lack of ice time available in Columbus. Both players will be on a short list for call ups if injuries happen.

The Jackets take at 6 David Jiricek. They also take Cutter Gauthier at 12.

Miller signs an extension at 5yrs 8 mil per

Wouldn’t make sense to CBJ. The CBJ are still building too. 2023 draft is really deep. The CBJ would be making a huge mistake by not protecting themselves. See Chicago this year. Jarmo is smarter than that.

Canucks pass because of the condition on the pick i get top 5 protection but there is almost an 100% chance the jackets won't make the playoffs next year which means the pick will would be in a far way draft offer can be beat by others teams, also don't think Miller signs that low

Well that's a ridiculous underestimation of the CBJ's playoff chances next year even without Miller.

Way too much imo. Boqvist is worth a 1st+, Texier is worth a 1st+, Bemstrom is worth a 3rd or 4th. So the trade essentially is for three 1sts a 4th ++. Just not even remotely what I would want to pay for Miller.

Marchenko also doesn't lack experience on smaller ice. St Petersburg plays on NHL sized ice. He's going to start in the NHL.

Washington, Boston and Pittsburgh are all up in the air imo. I'm gonna at least wait until free agency is mostly over before I commit to predicting anything about the playoff contenders.

Columbus has a hell of a lot that can go better for them next year than it did this past season concerning injuries and awful circumstances outside hockey. Having their defense start the year with more than 2 players above 100 games of NHL experience is going to make a big difference too. Plus they're adding Kirill Marchenko, Kent Johnson and Nick Blankenburg for potentially full seasons. Also they still have the potential to add significant players through trade considering how much draft capital and a surplus of NHL ready forwards. Lastly, their HC is going into his second season and will hopefully have a more well established system for them to employ. Considering all this, it is ridiculous to say they have a near 100% chance to miss the playoffs barely a month after the previous season is over.

New jersey and the Islanders most likely get in, if more than 2 teams drop out, like the blue jackets but don't think they are close even with a miller type player

Based on what? You don't even know what these teams will look like yet and I'm pretty sure you don't have a good gauge for the CBJ's potential.

Islanders had just made the ECF 2/3 past years, had a brutal year with lucl, Nj is a starter away from being a playoff team, Coloumbus doesn't have a good enough top 6 and depth yet

Again I restate that you don't have a good gauge for the CBJ. They were 14th in goals for despite losing their top goal scorers for 26 and 23 games, Werenski missing 14 games while also going through a down year in shooting percentage and they had 9 goals lost just due to offside challenges alone. They still managed to score plenty because they have fantastic forward depth. In fact they have so much forward depth going into this off season that they need to bench at least 4 NHL ready forwards if they don't trade any away for picks/prospects this off season. They weren't nearly as bad as all the people who dont pay attention predicted last year and they've got as good of a chance right now at making the playoffs as any of the other teams around the playoff bubble this upcoming year.

It protects the Jackets from giving up far too much in the trade. Jarmo is not one to get burned.

Gladly.

For what it's worth Marchenko is ready to go now. I don't know what to think about Kent Johnson but I don't think he develops in the AHL unless he has another high level player to play with. I could see him and Chinakov being down but won't count on it.

This trade is definitely dependent on getting Jiricek.

If we get Jiricek I think we can move the pick to Top 10 Protected. 2023 is too good of a draft to move a high pick for a (potentially still) rebuilding team. I am not sure Miller fits the contention window well enough to part with the potential of that pick that could be good for plenty of years after his contract. It probably doesn't work out between these two teams, I don't think players want to play in Columbus until they've actually been here and can't see JT Miller just cold signing that contract.

I'm not on the Marchenko train until he plays games in North America. KHL just this year downgraded some rinks to NHL size, but not all. That being the biggest adjustment amongst minor others.
Now that being said, I'd love for Marchenko to be great, however skilled and productive he can be. But I don't like the fact that some fans already have the surefire idea he'll be immediately productive/already an NHL lineup fit. Can't say that till he actually plays for us.
