1 Year Deals to Keep 7OA

Description
We have a ton of cap space for this year. What if we made moves for a top 6 winger and top 4 dman for one-year, giving our prospects a little extra time to mature and showing our leadership group that we want to take the next step? In this scenario, we also keep our 7th overall pick. The Letang deal is a huge overpay, as this is the only way I'd see him considering making a move.

Tarasenko won’t waive. Zaitsev and Murray probably cost more to dump, but you aren’t too far off.

Maybe Joseph and a 3rd to dump Murray? A second and a third to dump Zaitsev?

Honestly, seeing as the hawks get a decent pick and they need goalies, I would accept that.

I honestly can see Zaitsev being had for a 2nd round sweetener as the Coyotes need a few bad contracts to meet the cap floor. I'm not sure anyone would want the Murray contract to be honest.

I’ve watched Zaitsev and I always think he’s ok. Use him as ur 3rd pair RHD with Brannstrom or Holden. Pair JBD with Sanderson like college with Chabot and Zub as ur first pair. I think that would be Ok.

I don't see Ottawa moving Joseph. The kid can play. I could see a 3rd added to one of these deals. For Murray I think the key is salary retention. He's a two-time Cup winner and only has 2 years left on his deal. Maybe someone bites @ $4 mil?

I would consider moving Gustavsson to clear cap. Maybe I’m missing something here, but when I saw him against the Isles he was trash.

Agreed it would be ok, but those d groupings don't get us into the wildcard conversation. The team needs 1 top 4 dman asap.

Sanderson will be top four and I always like JBD when I watch him. Id give them a chance and reevaluate 20-40 games into the year.

Lol no. Murray with 2 mill retained and sending a high 2nd is an L for Ottawa. I’ll just keep him.

Zaitsev with Tampa 2nd and Boston 3rd to Arizona .

Joseph isn’t going anywhere

I like the idea of CHI getting a cap dump goalie or two to take a beating for a couple seasons. But that doesn't mean they aren't gonna cost the teams something significant to dump them. We don't need them, it just helps to fill the roster spot and make sure CHI hits the cap floor if they decide to tear it down completely. That isn't enough for CHI to take on a $6mil cap dump.

I would trade Gustavsson to get rid of Hamonic and/or MDZ. Correct me if I’m wrong but he looks like he isn’t the answer in between the pipes

Tarasenko isn't waiving for Ottawa.

And Kris Letang isn't signing anywhere for less than $8,000,000 x 4 years.

Why the heck would u use an asset to dump a 1 year 2 mill player who could be a 7th Dman and has been actually decent when he has played ?

I didn’t think you guys wanted to roster 3 goalies so you may as well clear cap space. I could be wrong on the personal you want to get rid of but still.

Depends on if you could spend that 5 million on a top six forward or top four d man

Gus really disappointed me when I saw him play but goalies r tough to predict. If you wanted to move Zaitsev or Murray he could be used in a deal to make it happen.

If Tarasenko somehow ends up in Ottawa, you don't play him on Norris line... That's 2 goal scorers and a powerforward without any playmaker...

Then you have the 2 best playmakers on the same line... doesn't make sense

Zaitsev has to be somewhat sheltered on a 3rd pairing. Use him in a major role against top competition and you're in trouble (Sens management/coaching is incompetent)

OP is retaining 2.0 on Murray. At 4.25 his contract becomes normal... IF he could ever stay healthy. But as he has been one of the most injury prone NHL players the last 4 seasons, including concussion issues, it has very low chances of happening. Which is also why Murray might be very close to end up on LTIR. The NHL is a physical contact league, you need to be healthy and be cleared by true doctors to play in it.

I wouldn't give up an early 2nd AND retain 2.0 on Murray to dump his contract. I would much rather a buyout

10 M$ loss split over 4 years or 4 M$ loss split over 2 years AND an early 2nd round pick?

Outside of his first 7 games in Ottawa and 2 games last season where he was completely left out to dry (vs Arizona and vs Toronto on January 1st), Murray has actually been good and has a 0.919 SV% in the "rest of the games" as a result

Agreed that is Tarasenko’s value. But with 1 year to UFA, and the fact that he’s asked for a trade, I don’t see anyone ponying up a top 4 dman or 1st rounder. Maybe a late 1st rounder at the trade deadline.

sigh, he wants to stay for one and was our leading scorer, Blues are cup contenders so unless its his value or more he wont be moved

I totally get where you're coming from. If he wants to stay, then that's awesome. He'd be tough to replace. I was going on the assumption that he still wanted out. Cheers.

Murray was injured or recovering from injury most of last year, he did have a good 9 game stretch , where he showed his old form but then he got hurt again. I would keep him one more year to see if he can stay healthy. If he does not retain his old form he sits, goes to Bellevile or goes on LTIR and gets bought out next season.

I think we've seen what Murray can bring to this team. And unfortunately, it's inconsistency and perpetual injuries. His injury issues go back to his Pittsburgh days, so I think we can see an established trend. I wish he could return to form and give us 50 good games, but his track record says otherwise. I'd deal him if the opportunity exists and use the cap savings to get a partner for Forsberg and to upgrade other positions.

if you can get Husso @ 3.2 I am all for it but I am thinking the back up plan is Gustavsson &or Sogaard.
