Sens
The first trade is horrible for Washington. Why on earth would they ever contemplate this deal? Chabot is an oft-injured shadow of his former self on an untradeable contract. And I am a Sens fan. He's staying put because no one wants to pay $8 mil for his 50 games a year.
The St. Louis trade is equally terrible for Ottawa. So we're going to trade a top-9 young prospect who plays like Brad Marchand, along with high draft picks for a facsimile of Drake Batherson? Oh, and we'll need to pay Buchnevich $9 mil a year as a 30-year old once his contract expires. This is exactly the Dorion-esque thinking that has Ottawa in a perpetual losing cycle. No thanks. Keep the picks and prospects.

I originally had Vanecek in that model of trade. Either goalie would work. Although I’m sure it would cost more than a 1st rounder as a sweetener to offload Korpi’s salary for so many years.

Definitely poorly worded on my part. I meant to say that SJ would not have to pay for Blackwood along with Korpi. The 1st is a recognition of the addition cap and term the team would take on. My bad for not wording it better.

I don’t think it has anything to do with what you wrote to be honest. If Chychrun was a Leafs dman, then the Toronto faithful would argue he’s worth McDavid. At the end of the day, Ottawa won’t get the value that they sent to Arizona to acquire Chychrun, but a package that includes a middle of the pack forward and two 2nds is certainly reasonable, particularly when there’s an extension in place.

If I understand the original post by this guy, his issue is that I have signed unrestricted free agents (none of whom are superstars). And that I traded a player with term, who is extended, for a roster player and picks.

I’m not sure I’m getting what you’re trying to say. I’m emulating what Detroit did last summer where they brought in a bunch of depth players, no superstars. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure they signed more than 7 UFAs.
And yes, Chychrun with an extension is going to get a return of a roster player and picks.

He can’t be worse. The worst goalie by a mile statistically in the NHL this season. Even Vanecek had better metrics.

Why wouldn’t they? Small price to pay for a legit bottom pairing guy. I couldn’t see Chychrun singing long term anywhere in Canada to be honest. If not in Ottawa because of the family connection, then I see him heading somewhere warm - maybe Tampa or Florida - on a long term contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boltsbeathabs</b></div><div>No I don't you haven't watched a lot of TB this year I guess as he's spent quite a bit of time with Stamkos and Cirelli on the second line and played a lot on the top PP. So,no I meant accurately exactly what I said. Thank you for displaying your complete ignorance.
The Perbix Derangement Syndrome some lightning fans like the poster who agreed with you is unf---ing believable. 2/3 RD is a little more debatable however being he's yet to play 150 NHL games and started slow his sophomore year, and has played better as of late. I'll argue 2RD</div></div>
I’ve paid pretty close to TB this year and know the exact role Nick Paul plays. He is an incredibly versatile centreman who can also slot to LW as needed, and plays specialty minutes. But in TB depth, he slots behind Point and Cirelli on any given night, hence the 3C designation. This is not debatable, unless you think Point or Cirelli slot lower. And to argue so passionately about Perbix reminds me of Sens fans arguing that Brannstrom is a legit top 4 guy.
Listen, I like both of the TB players, but if Brisbois was ever offered this deal, he should jump at it. Chychrun is entering his prime years and would be able to shelter Hedman’s minutes as he inevitably faces the aging curve.
At the end of the day, maybe we disagree on this deal. All good. I’ll be a tourist in the playoffs again as a Sens fan and am hopeful that the Lightning can take another run with this core.

I don’t think the Sens go there as those two guys are core to the rebuild. Unless the two teams talk blockbusters with roster players going both ways (Durzi?) which I would be game for as someone who embraces chaos in the NHL.

Is that your take? BRILLIANT!!!!!!! NOT</div></div>
Don’t you mean your 3C and 3rd pairing RD? And obviously a deal like this would come with an extension for Chychrun who is actually a top 4 dman on any team. So yes, that’s my take. And it is brilliant for TB as it leaves your top 6 and top 4 untouched.

Why not just trade Chychrun if you can sign DeMelo?
Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - DeMelo
Brannstrom - JBD
Now that's a solid defense.
Bourque + 1st would be a PIPE dream, no way they get as much for Chychrun</div></div>
I was wondering if Brassard is officially retired or if he needed the year to rehab. He was in incredible mentor and knew his role last year. I would love some vet leadership in the bottom 4.
I definitely like your suggested d-core better than mine, but I’ve seen this or a similar iteration many times on ACGM. So I decided to do something a little different for this ACGM. IMO, overpay on two solid defensive dmen, trade Chych for assets, and we’re good to go.

Trading Chabot AND Chych
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>I think there's a bunch of reasons why this doesn't work for me.
First off, I don't think you want Sanderson with Karl. It sounds great in theory, but in my opinion, if Sandy is out there, you want the puck on his stick as much as possible, and the same is true of Karlsson. Zub is such a natural compliment for Sanderson, I think any blueline adjustments start by understanding that this pairing is the only thing that works. Don't mess with it. Keeping those two together, I really don't see a combination that works with Karlsson. No coach in the league is putting the Eriks together for any length of time, and Graves-Karlsson already isn't great for Pittsburgh.
If you're keeping Brannstrom, you want to keep him in that same role. He's really good as the 3LD. If you're adding Karlsson to the mix, you want to bring in someone to be that Philips/Kuba/Methot type who really brings the best out of him. If you could add Jamie Oleksiak and Karlsson, then I'd be comfortable moving Chabot and Chychrun. Then you look for a 3rd pair guy to play with Brannstrom. Guys like Chatfield or Desharnais would fit in nicely with him imo, and probably fit the price point better than DeMelo.
The one sticking point that I've gone back and forth on all season is what to do with Chabot. He's a great hockey player, even if he's far from a perfect one. He has stretches like his last 15 games or so where he genuinely makes his contract look like a bargain, but he's also got warts in his game, particularly away from the puck. I also have serious concerns if he's ever gonna be healthy enough to be a guy you can rely on in the post season.
Also the Graves deal is just... bad. Definitely not touching it.
I think if there's the right deal to bring Karlsson here, and the right deal to bring in a great fit to be his partner, then you seriously consider making it happen and moving Chychrun and Chabot to make it work, and keep Branny as the 3LD. I think by far the more reasonable turn of events is Chychrun gets moved, Chabby stays, they go out and get the right guy to be Chabot's partner, and then address the 3rd pair. I kind of think Brannstrom is gone and they look to add size to the 3rd pair.</div></div>
My concern for Branny is that he’s undersized for a 3rd pairing dman. I’m really curious if he could evolve into a Torey Krug type guy in a more prominent role.
I actually don’t think Karlsson makes a lot of sense for us at this point, but the emotional and nostalgic pull certainly appeals to me. I want Staios to overpay if necessary to get some big, strong defensive dmen next year.

He’s a 31-year old playing on a league minimum contract. We’re not talking about Sebastian Aho here. $3 mil - I hope he gets that in Carolina. But thanks for reinforcing that Canes fans are the most delusional on CF when it comes to players’ value.

Any team for Korpi. Just threw in NJ as an example. If he was $2.5 mil I’d love to have him in Ottawa.
