Now I'm one of the people that thinks Nylanders value is overrated on this site. That said, you could at least retain on Miller this year if you expect a return like that.

As a leafs fan, I would love to get Miller. Him for Nylander 1for1 is interesting.

Miller had 19 more points than Nylander this year and is paid about a million and a half less than Nylander.
Yet, Nylander has one more year on his contract and will probably be paid around 7.5-8.5 on his next deal. Miller would likely get around that as well if he replicates it.

Not sure if those extra 18 points is equal to the value of a first and third, along with our top D prospect comes from. If anything, the extra savings from Miller and increased production for one year is about as valuable as the cost certainty on Nylander for two years.

For that return, I would want to see someone like Hoglander included going back to the leafs.

Grans and a second-round draft pick for Garland is fair. Kupari is expected to be a very similar player to Garland, perhaps as early as next season, since he's apparently cemented a spot on our third line.

"Miller for Nylander". That's certainly a misleading title. Now if I was two years of Nylander for one year of Miller....that might be a fair trade. But for the Leafs to add two picks and Niemela...way too high a price for the Leafs (or any team)

IF Toronto decides to move Nylander, they still hold the cards. This trade is beyond atrocious. 1 for 1 is still a "meh" deal for Toronto. No way you get Nylander, a first, a 3rd and a prospect.... Miller is not THAT good. Way closer to a 1 for 1

A couple things. Miller is the top option in Vancouver, he absolutely won't be in TO. Hes never going to push Matthews and Marner out of the way. He's also 29 and his next contract starts at 30 and he's going to want to get paid for what he did at the end of his prime. 8+ for 8 years in the minimum for him and I bet he's going to want 10 and give up a little term. Nylander is going to be much cheaper long term and is 4 years younger. The reality here is Miller would be a 1 year rental because they need money to resign Matthews and others after next season and Marner the year after, Miller being 30 and FA will mean they won't be able to keep him.

So with all that in mind, you will have a guy who wants big money, and is older for a you get guy who could still progress and we already have.

If they add Miller it won't be at the cost of Nylander. I would sooner give up a 1st top prospect and dump salary the other way to even out Miller's cap hit or offer a little more futures to get him at half price.

Something like Robertson, Niemela, a 1st and Kerfoot for Miller at half price. It's a massive price for a rental player but it actually saves us a million in cap and improves the team in a huge way without weakening us the season after.

Miller is certainly right now a better player but he's 29 coming off his best year and is now moving into the decline years and will want major money next year. He's going to get his biggest contract at age 30. It won't be a good one.

Exactly why Nylander is worth more value... Miller is hitting / hit the peak and will want his biggest contract. How is Toronto going to afford him at that point? That's a high price to pay for a rental.

Yeah he could be had for less than Nylander and then just add him at the cost of Kerfoot from the current roster and futures.
