Leafs signing of Tavares wasn't a problem. Signing Marner to an unjustified 11m contract was. Carolina's Aho had two identical seasons as Marner and he signed for 8.5m. Then at the time Matthew signed 5 year contract at 11.6m which was too high making him the second highest paid at the time (and still). So those contracts hurt the Leafs ability to sign or keep other players.
Muzzin signed a 5.6m X 4 year contract after the NHL had announced the 2019/20 cap hit was to be about 86m. A few weeks later, Covid hit, then the cap stayed at 81.5m so Muzzin's bloated signing looks even worse now.
