Rebuilding Philly

Description
The one where the head ups of the Philadelphia Flyers finally come to the overdue realization that a rebuild is necessary.

It starts by buying out James van Riemsdyk. While teams may be interested in taking on cap, this will be a scenario where Philadelphia can not strike a deal with another team and will ultimately be forced to buy out his final year.

With their first round pick, the Flyers select Juraj Slafkovsky and sign him to an entry-level contract to immediately play in the NHL for 2022-23.

Having lost a 2nd round pick in the trade for Rasmus Ristolainen, Philly moves some lower rounded picks to get a higher-end 2nd rounder in return rom Buffalo. With that selection, the Flyers take Jordan Gustafson.

Post-draft, Travis Sanheim is dealt to the St. Louis Blues for a veteran defenseman in Scandella and a first round pick as the main pieces of the return.

To really blow it up and let the young kids play and develop, Philly and Seattle get a deal done that sends Laughton, Lindblom, and Hayes (at 50%) to the Kraken.

Through re-signing RFAs MacEwen, Tippett, Allison, and Frost for the NHL roster and signing Ivan Fedotov for his first NHL action, Philadelphia now has nearly $14M in cap room as the rebuild officially begins.

Why even bother with the JVR buyout? He's done after this year and you have a bunch of cap, seems silly.

It may not be necessary but it just seems like a surefire way to give as many of our best young prospects as much playing time as possible. JVR takes up a spot but his big contract makes it more difficult as well. In general, I just can’t see him being here next year rebuild or not.

Buffalo is not interested in quantity over quality. Since they can draft a quality prospect with that pick you will have to send a quality player that they actually want in return.

Id keep sanheim, who has gotten better as AV was fired and maybe look to trade TK or IP but good ideas!

Yikes man I don’t even know at this point. One thing I know for sure is the Flyers don’t want to move him. We’ve seen how effective he is when healthy and in the lineup so it would be a pretty horrible look to trade him after giving up two young players for 4 games of Ellis.

For right now I’d say maybe a middle six forward and a middle pairing defenseman

This trade wouldn't even be proposed anyway unless the Flyers were really high on someone and Buffalo isn't. If Buffalo isn't high on a player, they would likely accept a deal like this in order to have better odds at drafting a quality player.

Interesting. In all honesty I don’t feel that the quantity/quality rule applies here because you’re getting fairly even value. We get a 2nd in an average/subpar draft class and you guys only downgrade by one round. Then you get a 3rd and 7th in a very deep draft class. The way I see it, a 2023 3rd is about the same as a 2022 2nd.

I have no problem keeping Sanheim, I just feel they will choose between Sanheim and Provy and I think Sanheim will be the one to go. As far as TK is concerned I’ve been loving his game recently and I think it would be a huge mistake if the Flyers let him go.

Now this I completely understand. And I do think it’s possible the Flyers could be high on someone the way they were with Wisdom

First, how does Fletcher still have a job.
He took a team that missed the playoffs by 13 points and transformed it to a team six points away from last OA.
IMO, even if the Flyers offered 3 third round picks (about the correct value to move up a full round) Buffalo would prefer to have four picks among the top 40 this year than to wait until next year.

It does, getting a high end 2nd for picks that almost never amount to anything.
