Description
*Jettison Monahan for picks. Fight for the best return possible, just get him off the ledger. Picks might be increasingly important if more are used at the deadline for playoff depth.
*Qualify Tkachuk. Maybe trade after, or maybe a multi-year deal at $9 is do-able (only he and BT know).
*Bridge AM and OK. I guessed at the price.
*Sign a couple of Sutter type UFAa. Here I chose Gudbranson and Deslauriers. There might be better candidates I'm not aware of, more about the concept.
*Who doesn't like Lucic?! Wish he was in at $2.5MM. Need to hold our nose one more year as there's little upside with a buyout.
*Depth needs to come from the farm with Phillips, Ruzicka, Valimaki (maybe), Pelletier, Gawdin, Mackey, etc. No $ for Lewis, Richardson, Ritchie, Stone, etc.

I like Gudbranson but he is not worth 3M.

2 years for Kylington is either too short or too long. either do 1 year so he stays RFA or 3+ so you buy more than 1 UFA year

Tkachuk obviously isn't signing a 1 year deal in Calgary, Flames probably file for Arbitration so he never actually sees that 1 year QO

Mangiapane is getting at least 4+ years

Tough offseason coming for Treliving.

Need to hope Monahan plays well down the stretch/playoffs. Otherwise the Flames are including a sweetener to move him for a minimal return.

The Flames have exercised their leverage on Mangiapane twice now, making him take his QO and then on his current 2yr deal. This is a guy that may score 40 goals this season. He's a core part, it's time to treat him like one.

Kylington will be an interesting negotiation. He will be a year from UFA, the Flames likely need to make a commitment to him. Could be anywhere from3-4.5 depending on term.

So much of this offseason will be dependant upon the playoffs. If the Flames are able to have some level of playoff success, they need to do everything they can to extend Tkachuk and Gaudreau. Won't be cheap, likely 20 million between the two.

Gudbranson has been a good fit and I think the Flames would love to keep him, they just can't do it at his 1.95, never mind giving him a raise. He's a guy who's made quite a bit of money in his career and he's bounced around a fair bit. He's got a young family, I'm sure he'd love to find a home for multiple seasons. I'd offer him the Zach Bogosian deal 850k x3 with some form of NTC for a little security for Gudbranson. Maybe, he wants to chase money, but if I'm the Flames I'd pitch him on some security rather than money.

Sorry for the long post lol, but one last thing. I wonder if the Flames look at dipping into LTIR this offseason given their cap crunch. Maybe look to take on a guy like Weber who won't be playing again

In Monahan’s first two seasons, 13/14 - 14/15, he had 0.91 goals per 60 minutes 5v5, and 1.55 points per 60 minutes 5v5
In Monahan’s next four seasons, 15/16 - 18/19, he had 0.98 goals per 60 minutes 5v5, and 2.19 points per 60 minutes 5v5
In Monahan’s recent three seasons, 19/20 - 21-22, he has 0.48 goals per 60 minutes 5v5, and 1.27 points per 60 minutes 5v5

Monahan has a cap hit of $6.375MM

For reference, these centres have a points per 60 5v5 near 1.27 this season
Devin Shore ($850K)
Jake Evans ($750K)
Sean Kuraly ($2.5MM)
David Kampf ($1.5MM)
Derek Grant ($1.5MM)

Which one of these guys is worth a 2nd and a 3rd, if their cap hit was $6.375MM?

You’re not getting anything for Monahan.

I think Monahan is done as a centre. His best bet is working on his shot again and becoming a left wing sniper

This season, Monahan has a 0.29 goals per 60 at 5v5, and a 0.86 points per 60 at 5v5

How he is 8th in toi among forwards, and never scratched, is bewildering.

It’s becoming increasingly more likely that this is Monahan’s final contract in the NHL, as he’s so far below replacement level.

His last four years goals per 60 5v5 numbers are;

1.05
0.61
0.46
0.29

Edit: defencemen score more goals than him

There are 55 defencemen with 4 or more goals at 5v5, as compared to Monahan’s 3.

26 more that also have 3.

A two year contract for Mangiapane? That could very well piss him off and ensure he doesn't stay long term. Depending on the AAV you gotta lock that guy up 4-6 more years.

Liked because you made me laugh.

Yeah, when this contract is done, he’ll sign for league minimum somewhere, then get waived.
