Tell me this isn't a better format than the current all star game. Teams are set up with 9 skaters and 2 goalies. All skills events have 4 invitees, who are specialists in that event, and brings in younger players and/or guys on bad teams that aren't putting up the numbers to be all stars, but are still very talented. Every team has a player at the all star game weekend, even if they are only an invitee to the skills competition, which gives everyone an excuse to tune in to that, while also keeping the integrity of it being an actual all star game with the best players from every division, even if 4 of them are from the same team and a few teams don't have a representative. On game day, there are 5 games:
1. Pacific vs. Central
2. Alumni Game
3. Atlantic vs. Metropolitan
4. Canada Women's All Stars vs. USA Women's All Stars
5. Finals (winner of Games 1 and 3)
The Alumni Game would be the all stars from 25 years ago (arbitrarily chosen so that we get to kick off this new game with Gretzky involved lol). I think this would make for a better game day, as you have legitimately the best players in the league playing in 3 of the games, highlight the women's game with the all stars from the two premier women's hockey nations, and then have a throwback game in there for the older fans, and let the next generation see some of the guys they've only heard about. I also would not be opposed to having an all rookie team in some capacity (maybe have a game of rookies vs. specialists? Idk, not gonna worry about that for now, but that would be worth exploring imo, maybe if the alumni game sucks that could be a replacement). I selected players I thought would deserve to be there using my new format below.
Pacific:
Gaudreau-McDavid-Stone
Meier-Draisaitl-Pietrangelo
J.T. Miller-Terry-Q. Hughes
Markstrom / Demko
Central:
MacKinnon-Rantanen-Makar
J. Robertson-Kadri-Kaprizov
Connor-Kyrou-Josi
Saros / Hellebuyck
Atlantic:
Marchand-Matthews-McAvoy
Huberdeau-Stamkos-Hedman
Tavares-Batherson-Ekblad
Campbell / Vasilevskiy
Metropolitan:
Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Kreider
Panarin-Aho-Fox
Guentzel-Crosby-Letang
Jarry / Andersen
Specialist Invitees:
Fastest Skater: Barzal, Larkin, Formenton, Dahlin
Hardest Shot: Chara, Carlson, Doughty, Chychrun
Whatever the skill event is: Zegras, Suzuki, J. Hughes, P. Kane
Accuracy Shooting: DeBrincat, Giroux, McCann, Laine
Save streak: Shesterkin, Bobrovsky, Gibson, Fleury
Definitely a concept that should be explored, great idea, the NHL could easily expand on that too
