What do you think should be the adds? MAF getting more than a 2nd from a playoff team without retention seems unlikely to me. Of course he has some say in the trade that might be the issue but I’m not addressing player’s feelings as no one on here actually knows what the players think. Pavelski would need retention to go elsewhere also so a similar thought there but maybe a 2nd instead of 3rd? What’s the issue with the DET trade?

Staal isn’t the main piece and can go to AHL for all I care. Pius is the upgrade. Fleury likely won’t play much down the stretch or in playoffs but with his experience I think it’s a valuable plan b to have no?

Issues with the DET trade:

1. Staal has a NMC, and while it’s possible he waives to go back to NY, the clause is likely there for stability, so he doesn’t have to move his family again this late in his career.
2. Detroit doesn’t have much interest in Chytil or Georgiev, they don’t fill any needs.
3. Suter is the Wings’ 2nd line center, and there’s no way Chytil can replace that. While they could move Fabbri to the middle as a quick fix, it’s not worth the hassle when the return for Suter isn’t what they want in the first place.

Great response! Thanks. I only used this trade as I saw a wings fan post it earlier today. I like the idea so wanted to see if this was a hypothetical option. I’d be fine completely removing Staal but if they aren’t interested in the others the conversation dies there.

I think the hawks would prefer retaining on MAF in order to get a better return but I agree that his value with no retention is a 2nd.

Enough teams will be interested in a nearly PPG Pavelski (retention is no issue) that Dallas gets a 1st + a good prospect for him. TDL bidding war among contending teams will have someone pay above market value for him.

Detroit trade, they hit the nail on the head with this reply:

The Dallas trade, they are in contention and Pavelski is very important to that club, I don't see them parting with him while they have a chance to make the playoffs.

As for the Chicago trade, that was the closest one to hitting, but I feel like they'll need a goalie coming back. Maybe Georgiev and some other asset(s) depending on retention.

Ya the Dallas trade is assuming they fall out of playoffs. I don’t expect playoff teams to sell
