As much as I hate to say it (and I don't want it to happen so don't kill me in the comments) there is a very slim chance the Pens have a legit shot to compete for a cup even this year and probably not past this year unless a thousand things go right...
"New management"--(Hextall, Burke, Vellucci, Rierden, Fenway) (minus Ventura, Rutherford, Guerin, and a dozen other people who have left...)
"New management" has zero loyalty to the Sid/Geno/Tanger triumvirate and the long-time, homegrown pens like guentzel, rusty, and Dumoulin...
Hextall has historically been a slow mover, a draft and develop, and patience and blah blah blah, etc...
while that is incredibly annoying on so many levels, it might be the best thing for this team that's at the end of their run as arguably the most successful franchise since 1990 or thereabouts... THANK YOU DRAFT LOTTERIES!!!!!!!!
If the Penguins heaven forbid simply fell apart this year in some way, shape, or form and were sellers at the deadline they would be able (theoretically) to put themselves in a very favourable position moving forward...
that is very unlikely because they always overcome an absurd amount of injuries and they still have enough skill to make the playoffs even suddenly having no power play and seemingly a mediocre offense...
so these couple posts will explore the "what if the Pens fell out of it this year" etc...
NOTE: I feel even if they fell out of it this year they would still try to resign Geno/Tanger for cheaper (players willing, of course) and get younger but still compete...
A full rebuild will not happen until Sid hangs them up...#facts
but another mini-retool is needed as there are way to many big contracts on the books, players are always getting older, and now breakout players are going to need raises...
Geno's value is a bit higher bc PIT retains $4.75M
normal value I'd peg at young roster forward, a 2nd or 3rd pick, and a B prospect...I'm not familiar with NYR prospects so I subbed in pick value...
Handshake Deal with Geno.
Agrees to come back after this year; we trade him to get an asset while giving him the shot to compete for a cup alongside fellow Russian Panarin...
Geno wouldn't fetch that much tbh bc he's playing with a surgically reconstructed knee and he's 35 for goodness sakes...
if NYR isn't a fit then maybe WSH with OVI or TBL with Kuch idk... just thinking of Geno wanting a Russian bestie...
If I am Dubas, I dont even consider trading Knies. His fit in Toronto is perfect. Highly skilled, very creative left winger who plays a very strong game at 6'5. His game is so dynamic and exactly what the Leafs need

lol my b
picked a random prospect... what do you think of the TOR trade tho.... would Letang be a fit there?
Vancouver says no, because Boeser is way younger and RFA controlled
but he was rumoured to be available...
plus Rutherford who likes to blow stuff up is now gm there...he's also a huge rusty fan... and rusty has been debatably the better player the last 3 years...
what would PIT have to add in your opinion to make it work... to offset the age gap...

Typical penguins bias. “Oh I know he will make a bad trade cause that’s what he likes to do” buddy get educated. Boeser trade rumours happen every year yet magically he hasn’t been traded. No point in getting an older player that will soon start declining and end up as a liability

I think a second, maybe a first because Boeser has been close to Rust the last couple of years, better in his whole career vs rust. Rust would also have to come with an amazing contract..
Letang doesn't have that kind of value. No rentals fetch a 1st, 2nd and one of an organizations top prospects.
I already mentioned I didn't know that random TOR prospect was "the best thing ever".... but regardless...
keumper was essentially a rental (col only gets him for one year but a full one granted) and he got a 1st, 3rd, and a top prospect in timmins
Seth jones was a rental and he got a 1st/2nd/top prospect
ristolainen got a roster player and a 1st/2nd
and etc....
granted my examples are not exactly accurate but there is a precedent...
plus Letang is a bona fide #1 offensive RHD STILL at 35... so maybe a 1st/3rd/B prospect if we're gonna compromise idk ur thoughts?

lol ok buddy pretty sure education isn't my problem...
since when is rust even close to "an older player that that will soon start declining and end up as a liability"??? like not even close he still has a solid 4 years of prime rusty 2.0...
CBJ pass. Would rather have Texier - playing the best hockey of his career right now.
PIT doesn’t really have any prospects of note they can offer to sway CBJ, and don’t care for/need Petersson or two AHL depth guys.
CBJ didn't seem to have much in the way of solid top-4 D.... but I'm not too familiar with them...
Pettersson is also having a great year rn... he's a legit #3-4 DFD who thinks he's a TWD sometimes...

Werenski and Bean have actually been playing great as our top pair, all things considered. Gavrikov is probably our best overall D, and he’s been our #2 LD. Boqvist has been great on the second pair, but for injuries.
Right now, CBJ needs (1) High end, Top-six forwards (preferably C), and (2) Top-pairing RD. Bean has been great, all told, but I feel if we could get a top-pairs RD, allow some of our D depth to slide down, it could be beneficial.
You’re also talking about a rebuilding club, so picks and good prospects always work, too.

Sorry bud but Rust is almost 30 and does not fit anywhere close to the Canucks timeline whereas Boeser is 25 and just heading into his prime years and is part of the core
