The value of the Pens' trade isn't bad, but it just doesn't work financially. Holl is offensively a little bit of an upgrade over Ruhwedel and Friedman, but I don't think they're both all-around better players.

Staal has a NMC, he won't wave for any team.
Also Detroit doesn't want Ritchie and would rather get nothing for Staal if he was to be moved. You would have to add a pick for us to take Ritchie.

Detroit trade is bad. Staal fills a need, Ritchie does not and also has more term and is redundant to us. Serves us no purpose. Furthermore, Staal has a NMC for a reason. He has already stated his family's stability is more important than chasing a cup, he's not going anywhere.
