Pens don't have close to the space for that even if you retained 50%.

EDM adds another piece.
PIT doesn't have the cap space for that even with the retention, and they can't trade that 2nd (it's already tied up as a conditional pick from a previous trade). NSH isn't going to retain $2M on Johansen. Both teams decline.

Johansen (2 mill retained) and Allard for Zucker and POJ?
Id be happy to take Ryan Johansen.
But not at 8M this season and 3 more after. At 4M-5M per would be great for a 29 year old, 6-3, 220 pound Power Forward, RH shot, good at FO’s; even if he has fell off some.
But would Nashville retain 3M-4M for this season and 3 more.?? Probably not(and I’d rather Benning or Rittich than Allard).
And Zucker contract expires after this season. And Zucker has trade value. Especially if retain 1M-2M and trade Zucker to a contender at the TD at 3.5M-4.5M for this season and next.
But like others already have said, Pens don’t have the cap space without sending back a contract back like Zucker.
And Pens 2nd isn’t taken up in a conditional pick for Carter anymore. The condition was if the Pens reach the SC finals in 20-21 season, the 3rd becomes a 2nd. And the conditional 4th becomes a 3rd if Carter plays 50% of games in this season(21-22).
Copy and paste:
The Penguins are acquiring forward Jeff Carter from the Kings in exchange for two conditional draft picks: a 2022 third-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick.
Should the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Final and Carter plays in at least 50% of the games, the third becomes a second. The 2023 fourth-rounder becomes a third-rounder if Carter plays in at least 50 games next season.
The Kings are also retaining 50% of Carter’s remaining salary as part of the deal. He is signed through the end of the 2021-22 season at a salary cap hit of $5.272M per season.
