Ottawa didn't pick up Byron on waivers last season while they were still rebuilding, they are not going to acquire him next season

Unless maybe you retain 50% and keep this picks swap

Strome's a middle six center so what do you expect in return, a top line scoring winger? Ylonen's projected as a top nine (Still unsure about top 6 or middle 6 upside) two way sniper and Poehling as a third line center, both of them fixes the issue that Strome's not playing and being paid to do so.

There's in fact a difference between taking a player on waivers with 3 years left on an expensive deal and a veteran on an expiring contract who is actually only owed 2.8M$ in real salary with a cap hit of 3.4M, Ottawa usually enjoy those deals. No big signings ahead other than Norris so still likely that Ottawa is far and away from the cap whatever what the cap will be. I don't think they do it but taking arguments of what they haven't done a year ago isn't proofs of what they'll do in the future.

We would accept this trade for Byron, only if we are struggling to hit the floor.

Strome not playing is on Colliton, the team Is 0-4 so obviously someth8ng needs to change. Poeling is not a 3rd line center in Chicago fyi so that argument is flawed. Neither of those players would make the team right now

Now as for what Chicago needs, they need defensive forwards. Lehkonen would be the obvious target in my eyes.

@csik, @sensonfire

Some insight on the forward group for next season (basically only made this post for that lol)

Yes, parameters obviously change over time but Ottawa wouldn't be the team taking on Byron, even for a 7th to 3rd pick swap. Ottawa won't have any probem reaching the cap floor going forward. Maybe you can find another taker though

Lines might be different but all the guys below will be back next year. I am assuming that Tierney, Sanford and Ennis will be traded (or just let go if no value at TD). White could possibly be bought out because it's the last year his buyout will be very cheap, but can't assume they will.

- Then there's Nick Paul who I'm 90% sure they will extend. The only problem with him is that he's too good on the forecheck so they want to keep him as a winger instead of center. They'd also much much rather spend that 2.8 on Nick Paul than Paul Byron, which I think will be Paul's approx AAV. It will be a matter of term. If he doesn't want more than ~4 years, then the negotiation should be easy.

- After that, you have Angus Crookshank who woud have made the team but unfortunately injured himself for months. If no injury setback, he'll be on the team for sure.

- Parker Kelly has a very good chance to be on the team. He might even stay all year this season. They love many parts of his game, could be an excellent 4th liner.

- Egor Sokolov impressed at rookie development camp, rookie tournament and even main camp. They didn't really want to send him back but thought it would be best for him. He will probably start his graduation later this year (after deadline?). If Logan Brown had half his dedication and determination, he'd be a top-6 NHL center right now

- Ridly Greig... this guy is still pretty young but will be a significant player in the NHL. Turns 20 in august so he'd finally be eligible for the AHL (he was AHL ready last season, was the B-Sens best player (or close) everytime I watched them play and he was there). He might just steal a spot at training camp

- Mark Kastelic might be groomed into the 4th line center. Big strong, excellent on face-offs and defensively.

- Clark Bishop might just be kept as an extra forward. Cheap, very fast, doesn't get himself in trouble.

- Tyler Boucher and Roby Jarventie will probably need another year. Ostapchuk and Daoust at least 2 I'd say. The rest of forward prospects are probably longshots

At least Greig and Kastelic will push very hard to make the team.

Oh I remember those days when Sherbak might be a star in the making, Juulsen probably makes the team but got injured and Reway would 100% be an NHLer iif not for his injury/disease.
Don't worry, by no mean am I trashing your POV, just putting back in perspective that a bunch of "ifs" don't make a professional team competitive. Obviously CF is a speculating platform but we need to keep sight that something plausible for one might not before others but it still doesn't discard the idea that Byron could hypothetically play for Ottawa next year. When healthy Byron's salary may be several hundred Ks higher than it should but it's by no mean a trash contract for a defensive/PK specialist like some think around here.

New coach may help but having less than 3 forwards that can PK is pretty relevant

haha bonus points for mentioning Martin Reway but the thing is... I am much more "ancient" than that. I have done this for decades, and even made decadent amounts of money by investing in some players rookie cards. My biggest coup was Erik Karlsson

Habs fanbase is at least 5 times bigger than the Sens fanbase, plus you have a huge pool of medias including dinosaurs overhyping Habs prospects like crazy. Sens prospects are unknown for the most part, for example, there's people on CF who think they could get Pinto with Kravtsov. Another ex : KK young guns RC was selling for much more than Batherson YG... Why do you think? Markets but KK might (sorry have to use this word again as I don't know the future!) never be as good as Drake.

Another thing is Habs drafting has completely sucked since 2007. Opposedly, Sens drafting has been one of the best since 2008 (I'd take Habs ownership and management though, except for the Mailloux part)

I'm not forcing anybody to "believe" in what I say but I can say that hockey is one of the subjects I know the most about in life. Don't ask me about any other sport though. I follow my 2 countries (France/Italy) for international soccer and that's it. If I am using terms like the ones you bolded, it is simply to cover my bases because talking in absolute for things you have zero control over is a bit stupid to be honest.

- I am assuming that Tierney, Sanford and Ennis will be gone : it's the logical way to go. Ennis has been signing 4 cheap 1-way deals in a row, hes a vet stop gap for teams. They'll realize soon enough that Sanford is just "there" (Sens pro scouting is absolutely awful). Tierney is a decent player but not a guy the Sens should keep, he doesn't fit the bottom-6 and the style of game the Sens want to play. Most Sens fans hope we'll go in a different direction. I was very vocal (not here) about trading him in summer 2019 when his value was at its peak but Dorion stupidly hang onto the asset until it depreciated (he does that a lot)

- Nick Paul who I'm 90% sure they will extend : it's not a guy that should be very expensive so it's a no brainer that they should keep him, he brings "quality" to the bottom-6. It would have been stupid to say 100%

- Parker Kelly ... He might even stay all year this season : it's actually getting closer and closer to 100% with all the injuries piling on. They like his game, he's fast, young, cheap and plays the "right way"

- "Egor Sokolov... He will probably start his graduation later this year" : again not sure how am I supposed to word that? This is based on multiple interviews and articles from Sens coaching/training staff. They are very high on the kid, he does and say all the right thing, plus he's very talented. He's probably the biggest fan favorite for a guy that still hasn't played a NHL game for the Sens lol. It would be very surprising to not see him this year. Maybe he won't 100% stick, so it could be delayed to next season.

- "Ridly Greig... He might just steal a spot at training camp" : again, perfect way to word this IMO. Some already pencil him on the team next year. He's still a bit young but this guy is a stud. Check his preseason goal against the Jets for fun, made it look so easy. I can't say with certainty either way.

- "Mark Kastelic might be groomed into the 4th line center" : not a prospect I spent a lot of time watching/following, but after this training camp, I understand why he could be a 4th line center. Don't give much of a crap if it's him or someone else though. That's why using "might" is good again. It's true that they might have him in their plans because he plays the way they like for the bottom-6. He has defensive and face-offs skills that could be useful too and right now, they are hit hard by injuries so he MIGHT be called up sooner than later.

- "Clark Bishop might" : this one I dont really give a crap, jersey filler who can skate. I criticized his signing because I thought his 200 K$ AHL salary wasn't justified. He's a bit like JC Beaudin, won't look out of place but won't bring anything outside of good skating

- "Tyler Boucher and Roby Jarventie will probably need another year" : once again, probably is the correct word here. It means I would be surprised if one of them make the team next year. Theyre still very young

After reviewing this, not sure what you were trying to say here. I think it was totally the correct way to use these words. I didn't overhyped or talked with certainty like many fans do about their team. I simply told you the possibilities.

With the injury list growing, I would take Byron now if he didn't have another year, but I'm also not the one paying the bills so even though Sens can easily afford it, doesn't mean Melnyk would approve it. It's another factor that hasn't been talked about.
