You know who would have been absolutely perfect for that 3rd line with Gallagher and Hoffman?

He is gone though so IF Poehling can't cut it we need to find someone else.

Chicago declines easily, you aren't getting Strome for a 3rd pairing rental D man going on 31 years old and a 3rd round pick

Ya I know. Just would have been nice.

I think we should just hand Poehling the 3 spot anyway. A couple preseason games isn't enough to make a judgement call on. Our only other option is Paquette so might as well see what Poehling can do in real games.

Chiarot I'd not a 3rd pairing D and Strome is not worth much more than that but it's fine

Well without signing Hoffman whose simply a forward too many on a team full of forwards, I think keeping Danault at 6M vs Hoffman at 4.5M would have been better suited. Obviously this is all hindsight though. It would have had to happen before the KK OS which throws a wrench in everything.

Strome is 24 years old and an RFA and shown he's a .6ppg player (he was injured last year for part of the year, and the year prior was out for multiple weeks with potentially Covid...Hawks said a bad flu. Was also moved to to the wing for 20 games the prior year which was a bad move by the coach as his production fell off). Strome is a tweener 2c/3c depending on who's on his wings.

Chiarot is a UFA and will be 31 years old this season, he's worth something to a cup chasing team looking for depth but to a non cup chasing team he has little to no value. 90% of Montreal AGMs on here have him as a 3rd pairing and on a good defensive team, that's pretty accurate.

See I think we have different views of where Chicago will finish. The west as a conference is not that strong. I see Chicago finishing 3rd in their Division behind just Colorado and Winnipeg. The other division is just as wide open you have Vegas at 1 and Edmonton at 2 but then it's anyone's guess who is 3 on back. Chicago absolutely could be a playoff contender and Chiarot would be an upgrade on De Haan.

The central specifically, is probably the most competitive division in hockey with St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas, Winnipeg, and Colorado all going to fighting for a playoff spot. The class of the division is obviously Colorado, Winnipeg, and Vegas and Chicago will never make it through them so they aren't giving away strome for a rental in Chiarot who arguably may be an upgrade over De Haan. If Chicago was going to consider this, they'd go pick up Reilly from the Leafs for Strome and a pick and truly get an upgrade over De haan.

Strome does not get you Reilly, Toronto would want Dach + so I don't think there is a deal there. I just see a better fit for both sides in a Montreal and Chicago trade. Maybe you don't see enough of Chiarot or perhaps don't like defensive D men or whatever but the value is fair. We could change it up to make you feel better and just offer a 2nd and 3rd (which equates to the value of Chiarot + 3rd) and Move Chiarot somewhere else for a 2nd but that is splitting hairs.

Reilly is a UFA rental and there is no way in hell he gets a young high end prospect/player such as Dach. Reilly is worth Strome and a 2nd or maybe Strome + Nylander and 3rd...both have been proposed on here by Toronto fans.

Chiarot and a mid to late 3rd is not getting Strome and like I said, Chiarot isn't much of an upgrade if at all over DeHaan so doesn't move the needle for Chicago. Lastly, Murphy, McCabe, DeHaan and Stillman are all stay at home defenders on the Hawks roster today.

Toronto fans like to use Reilly as the new scapegoat now that Anderson is gone but he is worth more than Strome who I have seen moved for a 2nd and 3rd or 2 3rds by Hawks fans. Even on as a rental you are giving up a 1st + for Reilly so like Dach + 2nd or 1st + Strome.

Whoa, you are way off base on Dach's value considering your thinking Dach is only worth a late 1st (playoff team would be trading for Reilly). Dach was a top 5 pick and franchise prospect; he's worth at least two late 1st's plus and Reilly as a rental is not worth two late 1st's plus; no way is Reilly as a rental going to return Dach much less Dach + a 2nd...that's absolutely crazy to think that.

Put it another way, Seth Jones with an extension in place couldn't get Dach which is what Colombus wanted as widely reported.

Strome is worth a late 1st all day or (2) 2nd round picks. Like I said, Strome + a 2nd or Strome + Nylander + a 3rd gets Reilly as a rental all day.

LMAO! Dach is not a "franchise prospect" an elite prospect maybe or 1st line prospect for sure but he is not in McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby range not even close! If that was the case he would be worth 4 1sts not 2 but hey go ahead and overvalue him that is your prerogative. I stand by my assessment of Reilly, Chiarot and Strome Reilly = 1st + 2nd or A prospect (not A+ but a solid A) even as a rental, Strome = 2 2nds (tops) or a 2nd and 3rd and Chiarot = 2nd + 3rd to just a 2nd. Strome's value is only marginally higher than Drouin's both career 0.59 ppg players both around the same age and both drafted 3rd overall. Strome gets the slight edge because he is a center and not a winger hence the 2 2nd's tops instead of just a single 2nd.

As widely used by ranking prospects by the experts...
Elite = Top of the league, best of the best
Franchise = A core piece a team builds around (1 step down from elite)

Right here shows me how off you are. "1st + 2nd or A prospect)....an A prospect is worth a heck of a lot more then a 2nd round pick and not interchangeable.

Seth Jones, who came with an extension, set the market on what top 15 D men are worth and that's WITH an extension. Reilly is worth a late 1st plus a 2nd I agree with that, but again, you are wrong if you think A prospects are only worth a 2nd round pick. Strome + Nylander + a 3rd = similar value to a late 1st and late 2nd all day long which you and I agree is about what Reilly is worth as a rental.

Sorry, had the definitions backwards, my bad. Maybe I have a different idea of what an A prospect is as well, for me an A+ prospect is Caufield, Guhle, Reichel or Dach where as an A prospect would be Norlinder Struble, Beaudin or Vlasic.

I view this as such which aligns with some of the experts...
A+ would be the top 1 or 2 picks every year...truly rare elite talent
A would be franchise core player that is top line like Caufield or Dach...not sure I'd even put Reichel in there yet (typically top 10 picks)
A - would be mid to late 1st round pick that should be a lock for top 6/top 4; some early 2nd round picks could be lumped in as well as they develop...not sure I'd put Vlassic here
B+ would be NHL player but a bottom 9/bottom 4
B chance to make the NHL but needs work bottom 6/3rd line
B- borderline AHL/NHL who could get call ups to play bottom line roles

Point is, Dach or Caufield is worth more then Reilly as a rental 1 for 1
