If the sharks have to trade arguably their best player last year, I really dont see them retaining especially if it is not an insane return

I don't see them retaining for 4 years, especially not for such a low return.

The guy will also tank any value he has by taking the dumbest penalties in the world and it will cost you a playoff round and his play could start declining at any moment.

If it gets to this point you are better off just overpaying Gabe then doing this

Agree with the first part (we wont retain) but Kane took nowhere near the amount of penalties last year.

The Kane trade is so weird for a couple reasons. One is that it's not enough for Kane especially if the Sharks are retaining. Adding that Compher does nothing for them and is overpaid.

However, rumor mill said that he may have wanted out and may have pissed off some teammates. Again, all rumors. So it's either not enough if the rumors aren't true and arguably an overpay if they are true.

I still think Landeskog stays btw.

I think a year ago Kane was an interesting name, but at this point we are far too close to him going from valuable asset to cap dump any day now, not to mention the complete nightmare off the ice stuff that he has going on.

I just don't think he is worth it at this point unless the other team is sending back a similarly questionable contract or something like that. Esp considering SJ still probably thinks they are 'competitors'

Lets say that we disagree on Kanes value, which is clear here and put that aside.

You think a team who just lost the playoffs due to Kadri's dumb antics is going to go out and get another guy who does the same thing? Nah

I could see a team maybe trading for Kane, but not Col

He almost had a .90 ppg. Pump the breaks here. If he's that awful, why do they want him?

He also nullifies a lot of that value by taking the most penalties of any player in the league multiple years in a row and his personal issues are a headache off the ice. There are plenty of better options out there for teams looking to improve.

Also not my thread, I'm clearly not high on him

he was .9 ppg. Had the best season of his career with a team that was terrible for the most part. He had 1/3rd of the usual penalty minutes he usually had. If thats not intriguing? find another player lol

Like 90% of the non-Sharks fans online have strong opinions about Kane because he’s “cAnCeRoUs” and takes too many penalties and is basically a cap dump because he’s not good and overpaid.

Meanwhile they’ve watched like 2 Sharks games in the last 4 years and refuse to take 37 seconds to actually look up Kane’s stats and analytics.

If you assume people that disagree with your opinions are only doing so because they don't watch hockey and don't understand basic analytics then you will only limit your own views and end up in an unrealistic bubble of reality.

Kane does have top 6 production and has been a solid power forward.

However he also is the most penalized player in the NHL by a mile which is a problem, is 30 and plays a style that has significant aging curve risks.

Also while storys about his 'attitude' are usually bs, concerns about his bankruptcy lawsuit and a gambling addiction that saw him loose 10s of millions of dollars is a serious concern that a team might not want to put up with.

He is a player with legitimate pros and cons, and while the pro's are strong ultimately when you have a massive deal in the NHL where cap space is heavily limited teams will likely go for safer options.

Not totally onboard with this. Yes penalties have been an issue in the past but last year he had like the 51st most PIMs last year of which 0 were majors. That’s a huge improvement. And his production hasn’t dropped off at all yet. I would totally understand if we were talking about like Couture, but Kane is still in his prime-ish

Can’t disagree there. I’m just saying I see a lot of people who cite the “attitude” thing as a reason to trade Kane with 3.5M retained for like a 6th rounder lol

Yep I get it, that’s not an unfair opinion. My point is just that even with a bit of risk in Kane, there’s no reason for the Sharks to trade a player who’s been a consistent 30-goal guy for pennies on the dollar with retention. He’s one of the few contracts on the team which is actually somewhat okay in terms of AAV and term.

I think SJ's main reason to try and trade ANYONE with a big contract for value right now why they can before they are stuck with them. The rebuild is already going to be painful but if you could move out a Burns or a Kane that would do wonders. Maybe we are too far past that point though
