Except Tavares has been with the Leafs for 3 seasons. Carey Price is the face of the franchise and has been with the organization for 16 years. Losing Price would be a devastating blow to this franchise.

If Tavares was willing to waive there is a chance this could happen for pure cap reasons or if it was 100% guaranteed the leafs would do better without him and the cap hit. The issue than becomes replacing JT with another bonified top 6 center. And this years center market is kind of meh minus Danault and Granlund.

Barzel is a star but I think there is a whole other level he can get to in order to become even greater. Kind of like what happened with JT many years ago. Some stuff in the analysis is correct but the majority of it is false due to oversimplification.

Barzal is a top 15 center right now, there are times where he takes over games and pulls off things that only MacKinnon/mcdavid can do. When Barzal can't produce at a high level with Komarov on his line , isles writers/fans question if he's a 1c. It's bizarre. His point totals will increase once Trotz allows him to play with a sniper like wahlstrom instead of 4th line grinders. Quality of teammates obviously affects production, but people like to overreact.

Feel your pain. Barzal is playing in the same situation as Heiskanen, they play with a bunch of grinders and still are good, but with good players they become even better.
