keeping the main 3 FA but losing graves compher and Saad

Explications
Made the assumption that Johnson is done and will be on LTIR for the rest of his contract. I think Montour could be a good fit for the avs second pairing while letting the younger guys develop another year gives him a chance to earn a good contract next year.

Avs are not trading graves before the XD or for just a draft pick

If you want graves it’s trading after the XD with Seattle or avs so you have to offer something that helps their nhl roster

The point of trading graves is so you dont lose him for nothing to seattle. So it doesnt make sense to trade him for another player you'd have to protect imo. Obvioulsy I'd love to keep him just don't see how without giving seattle a ton to pass on him.

You lose a player for nothing no matter what. Let Seattle take their guy and you move on. Losing donskoi for nothing then trading graves for 0 help is so much worse than just losing 1 player

And Seattle isn’t taking compher if donskoi is available

Right but why lose a high quality player for nothing when you can trade him and then lose a player of lesser quality for nothing? Don't have many picks this year and Byram who needs to play to develop.

Byram has a spot on the roster and graves isn’t blocking him. So why lose a high quality player but you lose 1 in the draft and trade 1 away for nothing

    Your logic makes 0 sense

Avs are worse off by doing this

i'm sure theres several teams that would be interested in Graves if the sens are not interested. Should not be too hard to move him for value.

Then let Seattle take him bc you are over looking the fact of avs are losing a good player no matter what so why lose 1 and trade 1

And avs are protecting their captain they aren’t letting Seattle have the ability to start talking to him and offering him a contract

You don’t play cute letting your captain get hours away from free agency to protect a middle 6 winger

Because as I said Compher in imo wont be difficult to replace. If you going to lose Graves either way. Then esseitially trading compher for the value of Graves (who has more value). Folingo can do everthing Compher does for us.

Donskoi will be available, you glossing over the fact that compher won’t be selected over donskoi

Also you know avs can’t trade graves before the XD bc they won’t meet expansion requirements. Macdonald or EJ if exposed don’t meet the games player requirements over the r past 2 seasons

Avs only gave 1 dman they can expose to meet those requirements and that’s Graves

I agree that Donskoi will be selected if made avalable. I just don't see who the avs will protect over him. Imo protecting Landy does't make sense since he's a UFA and can just resign with the avs if selected by Seattle. Also Johnson played over the 54 games between the last two seasons so he does make the requirments.

You have to play 70 games over the past 2 seasons or 40 this season to meet requirements.

Where do you see that? under the EXPANSION DRAFT FAQ here on capfriendly it says 27 games this year or 54 over the last two seasons.

Just checked thats for a full season. The last two have been shorted so the number of games of been prorated. Johnson does meet the requirments for this draft.

@coga16 has Graves covered and is right. The Avs aren’t signing Montour. The top 4 next season is already set with Byram who was playing exceptionally before getting cheap shot by Kolesar (oh how VGK fans have selective memories). In addition Montour isn’t the type of dman they would look at if they lost Graves in XD. Also if they lost Graves AND moved on from Compher there is no way they aren’t bringing Saad back. Also the Grubauer contract seems to be either to long by a year or to much $ (I think the Avs real breaking pt with Grubauer is term a 5yr deal takes him to almost 35 and I don’t think they have any interest in having that). You’ve done a creative ACGM but there are a lot of moves that aren’t necessary when just bringing back existing players will do.

EJ's injury is not considered career-threatening but he shouldn't mind waiving. The only players from the Avs that they will leave exposed I can see Seattle taking are Graves or Donskoi - Compher probably won't move the needle for them. If Seattle takes Donny, they would trade Graves after the XD when his value will be higher. It's possible they try to trade one of Donny or Compher to make room to re-sign Saad and bring Newhook in full-time.

The one thing I would say is that a 35 y/o goalie isn't the same as a 35 y/o skater. If Gru's camp wants that 5th year and agree to a lower AAV to get it, I see Sakic strongly considering it.

No he doesn’t. He played 4 games this year not meeting the 40 game requirement and he has 63 games the last 2 years not meeting the 70 game requirement. There is nothing in the article you sent a link to about prorating the games.

I can see a 5th yr too, but no way will it be at $7M. And yeah goalies can just randomly start to suck, long term goalie contracts especially for goalies in their late 20’s are going to become more rare imo. It’s one thing to give a 23 yr old goalie a 5 or 6 yr deal.
