Description
Made the assumption that Johnson is done and will be on LTIR for the rest of his contract. I think Montour could be a good fit for the avs second pairing while letting the younger guys develop another year gives him a chance to earn a good contract next year.

I can see a 5th yr too, but no way will it be at $7M. And yeah goalies can just randomly start to suck, long term goalie contracts especially for goalies in their late 20’s are going to become more rare imo. It’s one thing to give a 23 yr old goalie a 5 or 6 yr deal.

Yeah, no way he comes in at $7M but I could see $5.25x5 as a possibility. Goalies are super tough to sign to long-term deals, for sure, even the young ones (hi there, Carter Hart).

No he doesn’t. He played 4 games this year not meeting the 40 game requirement and he has 63 games the last 2 years not meeting the 70 game requirement. There is nothing in the article you sent a link to about prorating the games.

Heres the capfriendly page

as well as the new CBA. See rule 63.

I initally had Gru at 6Mx5 but figured 7M would sign him for sure.

@coga16 has Graves covered and is right. The Avs aren’t signing Montour. The top 4 next season is already set with Byram who was playing exceptionally before getting cheap shot by Kolesar (oh how VGK fans have selective memories). In addition Montour isn’t the type of dman they would look at if they lost Graves in XD. Also if they lost Graves AND moved on from Compher there is no way they aren’t bringing Saad back. Also the Grubauer contract seems to be either to long by a year or to much $ (I think the Avs real breaking pt with Grubauer is term a 5yr deal takes him to almost 35 and I don’t think they have any interest in having that). You’ve done a creative ACGM but there are a lot of moves that aren’t necessary when just bringing back existing players will do.

I think Saad would want more term and money then the Avs would be willing to give him. But I agree he would be the better fit. Montour has risk but personally i think he'd fit the avs system of mobile defence and is a RHD, he's not a Graves replica at all. I was thinking Gru for 6mx5 at first but figured he would sign 7m for sure (used Binginton as a comparable, but think Gru is better and will get more AAV).

I tend to think Saad, having expressed an interest in playing in Colorado, might take a reasonable deal rather than max out in a place like, say, Edomonton.

If we can sign him to a deal between toffoli and Eberles then for sure but if he want's the 6M he's making now I can't see it working.

Right. There's a lot of moving parts that have to work to get him to stay, the most important of which is he can't ask for more than $4.5M.

I think $5.25 is super optimistic. Binnington and Markstrom are what his agents are going to point to and it isn’t unfair.

Montour is a train wreck metric wide. Byram is going to play in the top 4 and assuming they lose Graves in the XD anybody they look for is going to be 3rd pairing and asked to kill penalties neither of which Montour is particularly well suited to do. I would avoid Montour at all costs, if the Avs look to add a dman in FA I would expect them to do something more in Oleksiak (probably to expensive) Mode of a physical presence pk guy.

Maybe but the Avs will point to the fact that the shots against this season were very low. The Flames were desperate and bought high on Marky. Binner won a Cup so $6M was the going rate although it looks like they may not get their money's worth. I think Gru has a stark choice: take a bit of discount to stay with a good team that will be in the playoffs for years to come or go to a rebuilding team that is going to be borderline for at least the next few years for $.5-1M more a season. The ball will likely end up in his court.
