Of course the idea is that even if COL does match, that basically guarantees losses for the Avs elsewhere, likely Landeskog who may get an offer from SJ for around 8mil if COL matches the Sharks' 10.5mil offer here for Makar.
Wouldn't be the first time Doug Wilson would pull something like this. CHI was too good too and he did it with Hjalmmarson to get Niemi. This would be on whole other level though.
4 BOLD MOVES:
1. Offersheet Makar. COL doesn't match not just to keep money for Landy and everyone else in the future, but there's TWO unprotected 1st rounders, a 2nd, and a 3rd coming back to them too. Sharks reunite the UMass kids with Ferraro, Leonard, and now Makar.
2. Ship Burns to SEA by shipping SJ's 1st round pick Weisblatt with his friend and likely middle-6 good young player in Gregor who's gotten experience with the Sharks the last 2 years. Those are two very, very solid pieces for SEA and with Burns still eating up almost half the game in his time on ice per game, he's not slowing anytime soon and his game's been very decent and evenkeel in both offense and defense than in years past where you had the high point totals in offense but poor defense.
3. Makar makes EK65 expendable. Blockbuster him to FLA for Bob who's the odd man out himself there in goal in a 1-for-1. SJ addresses goaltending, the contracts are basically a wash (EK65's the better player at his position with more upside so the extra year on his contract balances that out), and FLA gets a coveted RH-dman they can use.
4. Hischier gets Meier, they're both happy, NJ's top line is happy, it's a win-win.. Some NJD fans won't like the deal, but I think it makes a world of sense and it's more than fair value. Everyone's entitled to an opinion though and I respect that if it's not disrespectful or facetious in nature. On a lesser note they also get some of that experience and veteran presence they're looking for on defense with Simek (though he's still only 28); Sharks part with him given the logjam of LH-dmen with Pasichnuk and Kniazev behind Ferraro Knyzhov and Vlasic.
3 MINOR BUT KEY SIGNINGS:
1. Armia gives the team that big-bodied RW presence in the bottom lines for this suddenly very young team that probably still has an average age of 30 because of Marleau's resigning.
2. Larsson is that defensive anchor to pair with Vlasic. Replace Larsson with another defensive guy with similar probable cap hit like Savard from FA or even Braun from PHI for a 4th rounder.
3. Nosek on a 1yr deal fits the bill for a 3C guy who can drive some offense. He fills the role for a season before Robins/Bordeleau get ready to jump in the season after that.
Money all checks out as far as having enough to resign Hertl, Ferraro, etc.
Le salaire annuel moyen (AAV) de l'offre hostile est calculé en divisant la valeur totale du contrat par: 1. La durée totale du contrat, ou 2. Cinq ans
That's part of the idea. If they do match such a high-end offer-sheet, they lose out on Landy, and DW swoops in to take him a la Niemi post-Hammer OS.
If I'm Sakic, weighing everything, to me it makes a little more sense to resign Landy and collect two unprotected 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd from SJ (in addition to saving at least 2.5mil extra in cap space if Makar's OS is 10.5mil and Landy would be 8mil), than it would be to lose Landy AND those unprotected 1sts and 2nd and 3rd and still be more screwed cap-space wise with the 10.5+mil contract. I say little just because Makar's that good and makes the decision almost 50/50.
Avs match I think, and even then they could probably makes a couple moves to keep landeskog as well who wants to stay and probably wouldn’t sign in San Jose anyway
In SJ he had to compete with Korenar Melnichuk etc.
Very wise for him to waive there
In Florida he pays 0% state income tax in San Jose he pays 13% basically taking a 1,3 million dollar paycut.
In Florida he has a legitimate shot at a deep play off run not so much in San Jose.
I kinda miss the old days where GMs did crazy stuff like that and messed with each other and hey why wouldn't everyone offer sheet Makar, what's to lose?
That really feels like it's selling low on Meier especially given his RFA status and Mercer not too far over point per game as a 20 year old in the Q this year 😕
if you think offsheeting Makar to a number that the avs can fit and still sign Landeskog is an offseason game plan for the sharks....you will be very disappointed as neither of those players would consider signing with the Sharks
in reality a landeskog deal will be signed before you could even get the point of an OS with Makar. Hes not signing an OS the first day of free agency
At that price Makar would have to sign the offer sheet but I think no matter what the number is, the Avs match it. The guy might end up being the greatest offensive D man ever and is no slouch defensively! Will probably win 3+ Norris trophies.
