Moving from 12th overall (the actual selection) to 8th overall is a benefit to Buffalo, not Los Angeles. Therefore, the return from LA should be Reinhart MINUS that benefit, not plus. To put it another way, you can't possibly be contending that Reinhart is worth all that PLUS the difference between 12th and 8th overall, can you?
I was kind of at a loss on Reinhart’s value. He’s coming off a his best goal scoring year yet and he can play center to add positional versatility. I think he makes way more sense to LA than Eichel. Having said that, I used Taylor Halls trade to AZ, Ryan O’Reilly’s trade to Buffalo and Matt Duchenes trade to Ottawa from Colorado as templates as all these guys were in the last year of RFA status when they were moved to those teams. All of them were moved for 2-3 prospects and a first.
In this scenario yes I’m moving up a few spots in the draft back into the top ten., and I’m picking up pick 40 from LA as well as Vilardi, a former number 11 pick and Akil Thomas an NHL ready prospect.
It depends on how you view Vilardi and I value him as a future top six forward and the centerpiece of the deal here. He’s only 21 and he’s only gonna get better and in Buffalo he will be a top six forward here. I view Vilardi as a big piece and Akil Thomas I also value highly. I think he gets lost in the shuffle in LA’s deep prospect pool especially at center but I think he will be NHL ready next year and is an outstanding penalty killer and projects as a solid middle six forward. I see him as a future third line anchor.
It depends on how you value the prospects and I think Vilardi is more than enough for a centerpiece, and Reinhart gets LA closer to win now mode. And long term, Vilardi could be the most expendable one with Byfield and Turcotte there.
If anything, the only thing I think that could be added would be a conditional first rounder if Reinhart signed a long term extension but I felt it may have been a little too much. Doabale but maybe too much?
Either way I think it makes sense for both sides
