Description
THIS IS FOR FUN!!!

There's some really well thought out discussion going on another post regarding the Leafs acquiring a top 6 forward. Kubalik. Because this site is made for FUN...I wanted to get a little more in depth and post it to hear thoughts.

PROS:
Dubas was very concerned (aware might be a better term) about the Expansion Draft. Kubalik is Expansion EXEMPT. Essentially instead of 7-3-1....it's 8-3-1.
Even after (2) years of the whopping $1.85M cap hit...he's still an RFA...AND his qualifying offer is also very reasonable...unlike a Timo Meier for example.

Kubs has played with Kane for 32:07 minutes out of 413:53 minutes. So 7% of the time...AND 4 points out of 26...I.E...his scoring doesn't come from Kane.
Kubs biggest on ice asset is his slap shot. I would dare to say his slap shot ...might... actually be the best on all of TOR. Watch him!
Kubs 2nd biggest one ice asset is his physicality...Also something Dubas has stated he wants more of.

IMO Kubs is the 3rd best player on the Hawks right now.

THIS IS A BIG PACKAGE TO GIVE UP. I'm aware. Kubalik is really good and can help RIGHT NOW. I really do think that Kubalik opposite of Nylander is a PERFECT match. The speedy playmaker can dish to the sniper ALL day long.

How is a 21 year old defensive prospect a bust?

I don't agree. And that's 100% A-OK. He's 21 and still learning the defensive side of the game. I don't have any problems with a defenseman taking an extra year or two to properly develop a 2-way game.

While he doesn’t look as promising as he once did... he is by no means a bust. he’s only 21.

For the most part, D prospects take a little longer to develop. To call him a bust already is ridiculous.

As for your trade, I like the idea of having Kubalik, but his new contract is coming at the same time as Reilly and Sandin. Probably not enough money to go around at that point (which will be status quo for the foreseeable future). Leafs will need all the cheap help they can get for a while.

The package might be a bit too much... 26 points isn’t any superstar, and (based on Buffalo’s asking price) that package + some could almost fetch Eichel.

One of those prospects + 1st seems way more fair.
Then remove the 3rd.

As I said before, I think this is the highest price Toronto would be willing to move so I don't think it's a firm no, but may take some convincing to give up 2 top prospect along with a top pick. The more I think about it, if prospects is Chicago's main target and the guys you want are Amirov and Liljegren, I'd change the pick to a 2nd (assuming it's a late 2nd) and then take the pick going to Toronto out. As good as Kubalik has been, I don't think anyone could justify 3 top prospects (Amirov, Liljegren, 1st round pick) for him. He's just not that go to guy. I like that you pointed out how much he plays with Kane (or lack thereof), but that's also saying that he's not getting the other teams best defensive matchup every night. Which to me wouldn't warrant 3 top prospects, 2 would be a lot to consider.

The only thing I highly disagree with is Toronto's expansion plan, I think it's much more smart to protect 8 skaters and a goalie but that's besides the point since Kubalik is exempt.

Still an idea worth exploring for both sides though.

If we we're to trade one of our LW's I do agree that it should be Kubalik. I said this yesterday on a post trading Debricnat. I am fine with the value in this trade, however I don't think I would trade Kubalik for futures. I really believe we're almost on the other side of the retool and ready to compete again as soon as 2022. We should keep Kubalik, but if we were to trade him I think it only makes sense to do so in a package for a Top LD. Something like Kubalik+ for a 1LD. I think a trade like this just pushes the timeline to be competive again back even further, and I wouldn't want to do that. I think we can make one more run while Kane is still playing at an Elite level

Leafs aren't trading 3 first rounders for one LWer. Liljegren is the 7th Leaf Dman and is almost guaranteed a full time job next season.

I don't see the expiring contracts of Rielly and Sandin as an issue. Sandin likely gets bridged anyways to keep his cap hit low and prove he deserves more, and Rielly likely won't get a huge raise but that off-season I can't see Kerfoot or Holl on the roster still so there's an extra $5.5M in cap space. With Rielly likely not to get over what Pietrangelo got, let's say he gets $8.5M on the high end. Of that $5.5M cleared with Kerfoot and Holl gone that's only $3.5M gone. Kubalik currently makes $3.7M so with Holl's $2M available that puts him around $5.7M and I can't see him much more than $6.5M anyways so there's wiggle room there. I think it's manageable to consider at least for 2 solid runs at the cup. Not to mention that Kubalik expires as an RFA still so he can traded for other assets if they don't have the cap to sign him

Fair point, but if you are going to end up trading Kabulik for other pieces once his contract expires you might as well not trade for him at all. Amirov, Roberston, and even as far as Anderson will still be under contract after Kubalik needs a new deal, and their total value (in terms of dollars and cap space) between the three of them will still be less than Kubalik. Would rather go that route than trade for Kubalik.

Liljegren needs a new contract at the same time as Sandin and Rielly, but much like Sandin, it will be a modest raise.

Think the Leafs should stay the course on this one, let the prospects develop and see what they got.

I think the only refute I have to that is that they're in such a unique window to win now with the way the division alignment is laid out that they have to go for it. They should be the best in the division by far, and that almost walks them to the final 4 which will be a huge opportunity for them.

As for the contracts situation, if they trade Kubalik at the end of it and get a cup from it either this year or next, it's a complete win for Toronto. Trading Kubalik would likely get them a similar prospect in a couple years that would be younger and they can keep cycling wingers that way. Long term it's probably Robertson and Hyman as the top 6 left wingers anyways so getting another prospect then doesn't really affect the roster too much.

exactly. A prospect who is a bust has not played a game in the NHL and is over the age of 24. D-prospects take time to develop. When liligren was drafted he was strictly an offensive Dman, now hes become a solid 2 way guy. Put him with a veteran and he will easily transition to the NHL. He would have made the team this year if it werent for Holl.

???? So Holl and Kerfoot aren't on the team...you still have to fill those two positions with competent NHLers that cost cap. Plus Hyman is getting a raise (I assume he stays)

By that time, Liljegren will likely take Holl's spot and be cheaper. Kerfoot is 100% replaceable as he's nothing more than a bottom 6 option who found himself on the 4th line recently. You can replace that with an ELC easily

On the surface, yeah, I think that's definitely worth considering. Price is pretty high, as others have mentioned, but a top 6 winger at that price, with an extra year of term, that is expansion exempt, and expires as an RFA is very enticing.

I don't know about the value here but the trade is enticing. I've liked Kubs for a while now and it'd be interesting to say the least to get an expansion exempt player. The only note I have is unless the Leafs trade for a bunch of forwards with term they are doing 8 skaters 1 goalie instead of 7-3-1 so they can protect their top 4 D.

Matthews, Tavares, Marner, and Nylander are currently the only forwards they have to protect unless they resign Hyman before the expansion which would be a mistake in my eyes. Same with resigning Freddy or not. Then they can protect Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie, and Holl/TDL acquisition.

Lilly is everything we dont need for our defense rn, we have a full competent right side with Boqvist, Murphy Mitchell who all have reasonable potential to fill 1st pair, 2nd pair and 3rd pair duties for the future. The only leftside piece of the future I really like is Beaudin but maybe Vlasic can be something, regardless, thats only 2 young good prospects/players i like for the future so if there was any leafs d prospect to go after, its sandin. Were not getting Sandin and a first for Kubalik, I doubt we get Sandin for Kubalik alone.
