Like i've stated on numerous threads like this one, the odds of Yzerman retaining on Glendening are fairly slim, Yzerman will want to retain on Bernier, Helm, Nemeth, Filppula or Staal not on a miniscule $1.8 million for Luke Glendening.

And that is why you guys are not GM's, any GM will retain on any player as long as they are compensated for it (unless they are MB who not only gives away players but retains on them as well, Kovalchuck) Kovalchuck was only at 750k and Montreal retained half of that (they should have gotten an additional pick but that is on MB). If the only player who is garnering any interest is Glendening or if they only trade two of them and one is Glendenning Yzerman would retain on him to maximize the return. To say Yzerman won't retain on a Glendenning trade is not correct, perhaps more of a "Yzerman will not retain on Glendenning unless it benefits the Wings" would be more appropriate.

Also, No one wants Filppula or Helm and very few others will want Nemeth, so the Wings won't have to worry about retaining on them. Luckily for the Wings though they are all UFA's at the end of the season so they won't hurt the cap situation going forward (unless the Wings can't hit the cap floor, but I doubt that would be a problem, they aren't after all Ottawa).

Sure Luke Glendening @ $900,000 50% retention for either a 2021/2022 2nd round pick perhaps, But you and i know full well that he isn't going to get that kind of return.

So your saying Yzerman wouldn't take a 3rd + a prospect like Hillis or Gordon? Or how about a 3rd + 5th (Ott) which is basically a 4th? It would be bad asset management to turn down any deal involving Glendenning with retention just because you don't want to retain 900k. BTW I don't think anyone would ask for retention, I am just making a point that Yzerman would retain IF asked to for additional assets.

Difficult to say where the market will be at. Tampa paid 1st round picks for Coleman and Goodrow last year. Not a comparison for what Glendening should be worth, but does show teams' willingness to overpay for players they believe will help them win the Cup. Sure seems like a lot of teams are interested in Luke, Wings could use salary retention as leverage, especially if they don't intend to trade more than three players.

With Bernier injury, Staal might not be in demand, Ryan is cheap already, it doesn't seem out of the question that Wings would be ready and willing to retain for a higher pick.

To be honest, it's mostly just tiring that people just throw in salary retention with most Red Wings trades. Whether accurate or not I'm not sure, but Red Wings have a chance to move 3-5 players at the deadline. The incorrect assumption is that the Red Wings are not strict with their cap management. They are making all of the "paper moves" that everyone else is with the taxi squad. They are going to be very deliberate with how they manage their cap space with the revenue losses that the league has faced. Personally, I think I agree with the idea that Glendening is the last player the Red Wings would want to be retaining any salary on. If they can move Staal, Ryan, Gagner, Bernier with Salary Retention for exactly the situation you described there is still a market for Glendenning with his current salary.

Nick Paul would probably cost a 2nd round pick by himself. Probably a 1st if he's going to Montreal because they'd have to overpay. However I do think Ottawa would pick up Byron's contract for the next two years for a 2nd. He definitely wouldn't do what Paul does but I think a 2nd is fair compensation for eating that money.

i think i would pass as the sens, i think a second for nick paul is somewhat fair although i think personally i would rather just see the sens retain salary and get him to league minimum instead of taking back byron. I think if they move paul they would want to send him out to get some of out prospects like abramov or formenton in the lineup, byron can replace him but i think the sens would rather just go younger from within
