I think Montréal needs to acquire 2 D this summer. 1 top 4 guy, and 1 guy who’s top 4 or maybe 3rd pairing. I guess there is the possibility we just keep Kulak, but no LHD is overly comfortable on the right side, so IR would be better to lose him and sign a RHD instead.

I think no matter what, Romanov plays on the 3rd pair to start the year, and Cale Fleury is the 7th defenseman.

Yeah, people will now throw Seth Jones to Montreal, but I wouldn’t be willing to pay the price it would take since he wasn’t that good for the past couple of years. Ideally we sign Hamilton and a fringe 2nd pairing/3rd pairing D

So I guess that’s it then. It was a hell of a run. Over 5 seasons with the habs, he had 58 goals, 88 assists, and 146 points in 275 regular season games. (16 PPG) He also had 5 goals, 9 assists, and 14 points in 38 playoff games for the habs. He captained the habs for 3 seasons, and he finishes 10th all time in power play goals scored by a defenseman with 106.

He scored his first goal with the Canadiens on October 20th, 2016 against Arizona, on the powerplay. His final goal in the NHL was scored on the powerplay on June 24th, 2021 against Vegas in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup semi-finals.

Shea Weber has been a tremendously important player to this franchise over the past 5 years, and I’m definitely going to miss him a lot.

Yeah, great career for Weber, sucks it ended in a heart breaking way, this also explains why every player seemed to try to console Weber and why he was so emotional. I could see him get a job with an NHL team as a scout or specialist coach. My next question is who is the next captain? Imo it has to be Gallagher

As soon as Weber was named captain, there was never any doubt that Gallagher would be the next and 31st captain of the Montréal Canadiens.

Give him a job as a defensive development coach or somewhere along those lines

So apparently nothing is done with Danault, and he’s going to at least make it to the 28th before anything happens. I’m not sure if I interpreted it correctly, but it sounds like the habs haven’t made any contract offers other than what they offered at the start of the season (which was 6x$5 million). Obviously for Danault’s camp there’s no reason why they shouldn’t test the market, but if the habs can’t bring him back they’ll be in one hell of a conundrum. There’s no one on the free agent market that can come close to replacing him, so they might need to look to the trade market if need be.

Either that or they sign someone like Nick Bonino and Kotkaniemi goes from healthy scratch to full-time 2C.

Well it has it’s pro and cons, probably that Danault is asking for too much so let him see the market and he may realize that Montreal has the best offer but if someone is willing to overpay him, we’re screwed

22 hours left to sign someone or risk exposing a forward we don’t want to. Unless Bergevin planned on getting a forward to expose back in an Allen trade.

Seattle apparently wants Marc Bergevin’s soul, Suzuki, Kk, Caufield, Romanov and the sun + moon for them to not take Allen so I’d imagine he’s gone to Seattle, also MB please don’t expose Drouin/Evans as those are the only 2 who meet the requirement per CF’s Seattle expansion tool that I can see MB not protecting

Just sign Perry or Frolik, technically Lehkonen works too

I think Allen trade is whats holding stuff up, but isn't there someone MB can throw a QO to?

If the habs trade Allen, they’ll just give McNiven a QO.

As for forwards, Lehkonen is the only RFA who meets the exposure requirements, but they would obviously want to protect him.

If MB doesn’t resign Perry/Frolik, he's probably exposing Drouin or going 4/4

I have no idea why the habs would protect Kulak over Drouin/Anderson, Lehkonen, & Evans.

And they better not expose Drouin. That would be extremely stupid.

i think he meant it would be Anderson, Kotkaniemi, Toff, Gallagher and Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Fleury not Kulak
but i agree that either Drouin Lehkonen or both should be protected

Even then I don't why Fleury would even be in protection lists discussions. At best he'll be a bottom pairing defenseman, which Kulak is already, even more. I get he's the only RHD with NHL potential in the organization but it tells more about our RHD pipeline being bad than Fleury being any good.

100%. The only reason I can see Cale Fleury having any sort of future with this team is because he’s going to be cheap next season. Otherwise, I’m not sure he’d even make the roster. If he got picked by Seattle it would be an amazing thing for the habs, because Allen is so much more valuable.

Here are scenarios I could conceivably see happening before the lists are submitted, ranked in terms of what I’d rather happen:

1.
Protected: Kotkaniemi, Toffoli, Gallagher, Drouin, Anderson, Lehkonen, Evans, Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Price
Movement: Michael Frolík or Corey Perry signed at league minimum. McNiven receives a QO. Allen is traded for a 3rd round pick (low cost because of Montréal’s desperation).
Seattle Pick: Kulak/Fleury or one of the UFAs.

2.
Protected: Kotkaniemi, Toffoli, Gallagher, Drouin, Anderson, Lehkonen, Evans, Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Price
Movement: Michael Frolík or Corey Perry signed at league minimum.
Seattle Pick: Jake Allen

3.
Protected: Kotkaniemi, Toffoli, Gallagher, Anderson, (2 of Drouin, Lehkonen, Evans), Perry, Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Price
Movement: None.
Seattle Pick: Jake Allen

4.
Protected: Kotkaniemi, Toffoli, Gallagher, Anderson, (2 of Drouin, Lehkonen, Evans), Perry, Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Price
Movement: None
Seattle Pick: Lehkonen/Evans/Drouin

5.
Protected: Kotkaniemi, Toffoli, Gallagher, Anderson, (2 of Drouin, Lehkonen, Evans), Perry, Petry, Edmundson, Chiarot, Price
Movement: McNiven is given a QO. Allen is traded for a 3rd round pick (low cost because of Montréal’s desperation).
Seattle Pick: Lehkonen/Evans/Drouin

Due to the nature of there being very little time left, I’d say that #3 is most likely scenario. But we’ll see how it goes.
