Description
A Byron for Hickey swap was suggested earlier by @SevenLeg and I actually really like the idea. Hopefully I don't come off as too much of a hypocrite (just got done railing against the rumored Martin contract), but Byron is actually the type of player that I think could be incredibly effective in the Islanders' bottom six. He wasn't particularly productive this year, but in three seasons before that he scored at at least a 20 goal pace, maintained positive (or close to it) Corsi and expected goal differentials and was worth 7.4 wins above replacement (according to Evolving Hockey's WAR model). I think a third line of him, Pageau and Oliver Wahlstrom (or Kieffer Bellows) would be an excellent two-way, crash-and-bang type group. Byron and Pageau could hopefully use their physicality to create space in the OZ for Wahlstrom, who showed a bit of a mean streak himself in his call up last season too.

Montreal is a little over the cap at the moment and this trade would give them space both this year and in the future, as they could likely bury Hickey for the next two seasons. They could also trade or bury Jordan Weal to get compliant (who is another player I like a lot actually), but trading Byron I feel could get them a slightly better return than Weal, thus him being the subject of the post. I've seen people trade Byron for a lot less than is being suggested here and I think this would be a good use of the Islanders (limited) cap space.

Hopefully you all see where I'm coming from with this and shoutout to SevenLeg for floating the idea.

Hehe glad to see that random idea translated into a really well written post. Paul Byron's a personal favorite of mine would definitely slot well on that third line and he's a guy that every team would want, unfortunately he comes with an hefty price tag. For the Isles, it works for this year but does it still work when Pelech, Sorokin and Beauvillier need raises?

I like Byron as well. I think the deal is pretty fair at this point and if Byron gets back to putting up 20+ goals over the next 2 or 3 seasons he won't be as overpaid as he appears to be this season. Hickey is not going to crack our lineup unless we have a couple of injuries and he isn't likely to be claimed off waivers so the net gain is just cap space and a slight upgraded pick. All in all I think it could work.

That’s true, the one caveat in all of this is the term on his deal. He’s already 31 and has three years left and we have to sign those three and potentially Barzal if he gets a 2 year deal. Byron could (and should) be dangled in a expansion - not the best asset management but we’re trying to win the Cup. Treating him as a rental isn’t the end of the world. But if Seattle doesn’t take him, next offseason could be tricky.

I just think it's not worth the extra cap and year to add byron. Especially being cap strapped as it is and next offseason will probably be just as tight. Byron makes 3.4 million just look at what that could have bought you this off season.

If I'm MTL, I'm not making this trade. Not a chance. I can't wait for Ti-Paul to remind everyone why they shouldn't either.

I think too many people have short memories. Byron was one of the best players in the Playoffs for MTL. He shows up every game. Can play up and down the lineup in multiple roles. Plays a lot of PK. Is an alternate captain and generally a really well liked player on the team.

We are losing that to save what, 900K? Hickey won't play a single game for the Habs barring crazy injuries. Byron will play all 56 games barring injuries.

If the goal is to make some extra cap space, Weal is the only real option to move and if you have to sell him at a loss by throwing in a pick, so be it but your not really losing much at least. That's IF you want some extra cap space. The Habs don't HAVE to make cap space. They can make it work without trading anyone so this idea of moving Byron to get extra cap flexibility isn't necessary. It just looks nice to see CAP SPACE: 1M on our CF armchair teams but once again, its not necessary.

Now if your trading Byron for another player the Habs will actually use a lot but is cheaper, by all means do that but moving him for practically no material gain is absolutely pointless.

Martin bleeds blue and orange and is worth every penny he got in my opinion. I'm worried more about Greene getting the same deal it's doubtful, but we all know Lou loves his favorites like the potential Parise trade. GMing 101never trade for an unmovable contract you can't get out of Lou.

As far as the Hickey for Byron deal, nah the entire point of trading Hickey is dump his cap, not take on more with Byrons. Hickey for future considerations/free makes more sense or just package him with Ho-Sang.

Totally understand all of that.

Honestly, I like Byron enough that I'd be willing to give a piece like Bellows back as well (seems to have lost favor with the org and still has some goal scoring upside). The Islanders aren't exactly overflowing with cap space either, so this isn't a trade either team really has to make. I've just gotten the notion that Byron might be available and for not very much. You basically expressed all the reasons why I think he'd be valuable to the Islanders (or any team) and if there was a way for the Isles to steal him away, I'd hope they consider it, regardless of the cap hit.

If we can turn Hickey's dead money into actual, usable money, especially for a player of Byron's ilk, then I'm all for it. He is a little more expensive, but that's a trade off you make if he's producing. And no one is taking Hickey unless the Islanders are taking money back or sending a legit pick or prospect with him and JHS doesn't have that kind of value. Either we're stuck with him or we throw him in in a trade like this.

I agree getting something back for him would be great, but they're trying to shed salary to offer others better contacts like Barzal. If what some people say is true and Barzal wants more money than the Islanders have then they need to dump salaries. Taking a larger contract back in return doesn't help them with that,
