New York Islanders signed Mathew Barzal (8 Years / $9,150,000 AAV)
Anyone else realize that most of the down votes are coming from fans of other teams, who watch him play at most 2 or 3 times a year and are simply relying on the numbers to judge his ability? Most of them Leaf fans who think it's ok to play their "2C" 11 million dollars..lol..good lord. If you want talk about over pay, let's talk about the highest paid 2C in the league.
9.15 million for 8 years for a player of Barzals caliber is a great deal. Islanders fans know what I mean.

The Islanders aren't paying that much for a ***** afraid to go into the corners, no matter how many goals he can score.

True they can, but it's easier to move him now since money easier to move around. Whoever gets him will want him long term.

Dear Flames fans,
I feel your pain, but here's what it takes to Tkachuk. Best Offer! I mean you can go to arbitration, keep him for a year than lose him for the nothing. There's always that option OR you can accept the best offer from the results of the bidding war. Bottom line, you honestly have no leverage in these negotiations.
Something is always better than nothing. You'd think you'd know this after Gaudreau.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>Two of those players over 35 were still superstars and a lot of them were depth players who played very small roles. The game has changed since than and has gotten younger and faster. Currently the isles are on the same path as the San Jose Sharks, not good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to finish bottom 5. They are too old and too slow and Lou will likely make them even older next season</div></div>
You're reaching from their 23 man playoff roster, 10 were under 30 years 3 were under 25, which leaves 13 above the age of 30. You're right though the game has changed the love taps these players get today weren't 2 minute minors back then.
Lou knows what the team needs, he admitted a defenseman would help, but other than that I can't see too much movement. I personally think this year was just a fluke from the drop of the puck and the team we've been watching the past couple weeks are the real Islanders.

I don't get this generations fascination with youth. The 2007-2008 "Stanley Cup Champion" Detroit Red Wings had 9 players above the age of 35, 2 of them were in their 40's. Age means absolutely nothing.

13 straight road games to start the season happened. So a .500 record's not all that bad in my opinion. Last year, the Isles were one of the strongest home teams in the league and I expect them to be again this year. I'm not about to push the panic button just yet If they fail to turn things around at home, then I'll worry about it. Look at it this way, we've already played a third of our road games this season and still have 41 home games left. It's only November.

With 13 straight road games to start the season, first in the metro was always a pipe dream. We'll be lucky to be at .500 when we're done and to be honest, I call that a win for us.

Effort is bullsh*t, results are what gets you places. Put him at RW1 with barzal and PP1 and its an easy 30 goal season barring injuries.</div></div>
No offense either, but I don't agree with that. Your basing your opinion on a shortened season last year, where he did well, but players drop off all the time. Last camp he worked his ass off and won a job, which was great, I was pulling for him to make the team and was happy he got there. This year however he's struggling and playing like crap. He even admitted it himself. I'm not saying he can't turn it around but as of today he doesn't deserve a roster spot, he needs to step it up and earn a spot like everyone else, not show up at camp thinking he's guaranteed a spot and it's handed him on a silver platter for past achievements, Again this is just my opinion and personally I hope he does make the team and has an amazing season, but if he struggles I'd rather see him sent down for a bit to work on his game.

Those pre-season games are huge though, when everyones fighting for a roster spot. I'd take someone who worked his ass off to earn that spot over someone that thought he'd be gift wrapped a place on the team, because the guy who worked his ass off shows me he actually wants to be there. But like I said, he'll likely be there opening day regardless of the bad camp.

Wahlstrom's unlikely to see first line minutes to start the season anyways. According to Trotz he's been struggling in camp. Wahlstrom even admitted himself that he had. I wouldn't be surprised (though unlikely) if he spent some time in Bridgeport to start the season and see if he can find his game again.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Islesforthecup</b></div><div>Tbf though and im not trying to make excuses, just trying to understand why theyre so good in the playoffs and so meh in the regular season, they had key injuries. In 19-20 pelech was out for a major stretch of the regular season and when he was healthy they were dominant. Then he came back bc of the covid pause and they once againwere a top 5 team.
Same in 20-21. When lee was healthy they lead the division. Then he got injured and they were at best ok even after getting palmieri who scored 2 goals in 17 games. Once the playoffs came and palms found his game, they were once again a great team. I think if this year we avoid injuries to key players, we will dominate in both regular season and the playoffs.</div></div>
I know what you're saying. They play great in bursts then they just collapse and lose all that momentum. Squeak in to the playoffs and dominate. It's wierd.

The Isles struggle in the regular season because they go on a tear for 10 to 15 games, then they take their foot of the gas and suck for 10 to 15 games. If they stayed consistent the entire season they'd likely be a threat for top spot in the division and clinch a play off birth early and not making fans hold their breath until the last week or two of the season.

I don’t dislike Greene because of his age, i dislike him because he brings no value to the team. You can say he was fine, but it’s just not true. You’re a part of that section of the isles fanbase that glorifies 35+ players no matter how bad they play. Chara on the other hand is still pretty good, which is why I don’t mind the signing. He is a Greene replacement, because he does Greenes job a lot better.</div></div>

He is strictly a stay at home guy (he wasn’t even good in that regard). I would like to highlight Greene’s game 7 performance against the lightning (isles outshot 14-0 through 1st 2 periods with him on the ice) . Good times.
Trotz won’t put Mayfield and Chara in a position to fail by putting them on the same pairing. He knows Mayfield needs a D who can evade pressure and skate the puck out (similar to Leddy). Chara will obviously be a regular which will make Greene the 7D. Unfortunately Greene isn’t an NHLer at this point in his career.</div></div>
*LOL* 3 years later and you still don't know Barry loves his vets. Ok man. I stand by what I said, Greene was fine last year. I love how people comment about players they don't like, but ignore the mistakes of the players they do. Like Dobson's turn overs during the Lightning series or him coughing up the puck constantly when a hit was coming his way. Now don't get me wrong I like Dobson, I think he's going to be a very good defenseman for years, barring injury. But at least acknowledge it wasn't only Greene.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>Having hockey sense is irrelevant to the point I’m making. Greene struggles to complete passes and If you actually watch the islanders play , you would see that Greene defers to his D partner to move the puck out. Chara (who’s better than Greene) is the same way. Trotz system requires one D on each pairing to be able to skate the puck out and generate offense. Greene and Mayfield got killed last season in limited minutes and Chara can’t survive without a puck mover as well. You clearly don’t know the isles system.</div></div>
I'm not sure you watched many games last year as you're trying to convince me you did. Greene was fine moving the puck and yes, he tossed the puck to Dobson, but he also moved the puck out along the boards quite often, Like I said 99% of the time he always makes the smart play. I have no idea who you "think" is going to get that final LD spot, but I guarantee it'll be this set up. I can't see Trotz splitting up Greene and Dobson. Trotz likes to go back to what he knows works for him and moves them around when he feels its necessary.

Both can move the puck out of the zone just fine. You're over analyzing things. They won't be going end to end but they can still pass the puck. Greene did it all last year and he's stay at home as well.

True, he's lost a step, but defense is Lou and Barry's entire game plan. Charas not an elite offensive defenseman but he can still move the puck out of the zone when needed. Like others have said rotate him and Greene in and out of the line up with the kids.
