Description
For the Neal trade I chose Detroit over NJ and Ottawa for a few reasons. 1st he has a lot more opportunity there to play higher up in the lineup slightly increasing his value if Detroit chooses to move him ( which I guarantee they do). 2nd 2021 isn’t looking like a very deep draft year so maybe Stevie Y looks at quality over quantity. Could also drop a few spots in the 2nd round and make up that 3rd pick. And finally Holland and Yzerman have a history together. Maybe Yzerman will give one last gift to Holland after fleecing him in at the 2020 TDL. Wishful thinking 🤞🏻
Ok for the Detroit trade I see it like this. Using last years standings Detroit is getting pick 20 for picks 52 and 89 while also getting a really good D prospect in Samorukov in exchange for taking Neal. To put it in perspective of what it costs to trade up in the draft Calgary dropped from 19 to 22 for pick 80 and from 22 to 24 for pick 81. So moving up from 52 to 20 ( again using last years standings but it’s not that much difference no matter where Edmonton finishes since both picks are theirs) is a really good deal. I’d guess he would be traded with retention at the TDL or offseason and most likely be bought out before the final year of his contract. I’m a bit biased cause I’m an Oilers fan but I doubt Holland would give up a 1st just to move Neal when he could move Chiasson and get a 4th or mid level prospect instead and look at moving Neal next year with 1 less year on his deal. He’s gonna want something in return and I’d look to where our strength is and right now that’s on LD. I see Samorukov as expendable. Top 4 potential but we have Nurse, Broberg and Jones. Klefboms future is kinda up in the air with this injury problem.

Ian cole is not needed jones is a hell of a player. That's too high of a price to pay to get rid of Neal, Id rather keep him till the last year of his contract and buy him out. The 2021 first round pick would get them a decent goaltender in Sebastian Cossa.

avs decline,

Cole is better than some random odds and ends, they have the luxury of keep him. SO unless Oilers give something decent for them, its an easy decline

I like Samorukov but he is not that good drop Neal and maybe it will happen. Edmonton's 1st will be what about 10 picks in front of Detroit;'s 2nd.

With no Neal in this deal Edmonton laughs at Detroit. And it’s not Detroit’s 2nd in the deal it’s Edmonton’s so it’s a full round they move up (32 picks). Samorukov could easily get them a 3rd alone he’s playing top pairing in the KHL.

Samorukov is the responsible defense they have been waiting for with good offense and physicality projecting as a second pair. He's also ranked as 3rd defense in the oilers prospect pool they need to hold onto him until they figure out if they are keeping nurse long term. Klefbom can also not be counted on and kris russell is about 2 years from retirement.

Didn't Gusev lead the KHL in points in 2018-19. He finished 110th in the NHL last season. Any more KHL comparisons you would like to make?

Broberg is about 2 Years from breaking into the NHL. This season + 1 season in Bakersfield then a callup midway through the season in 22-23. Samorukov is at the point where you could call him up next season probably after 25 games. Broberg's decision making isn't there he needs to mature and the Oilers over ripen their prospects now.

The cap is going to be flat for at least the next 3 seasons. I did say I like Samorukov but he also has what 3 defenseman ahead of him on your prospects list Broberg, Bouchard, and Jones.

So switch Broberg with Samorukov I 'd make that trade. Samorukov coming to Detroit now isn't going to make them a playoff team by himself they can wait a couple of seasons for Broberg to develop.

If we swap Broberg for Samorukov we keep our 1st and you still give up the picks.

Yes I was wrong about the pick I did think it was Detroit 1st and I'm sorry about that but Samorukov being in the top pair in the KHL doesn't mean a whole lot when the KHL leading point producer 2018-19 finished 110th in scoring in the NHL the very next season. Detroit wanted a 1st and a top prospect for Eriksson and getting future considerations so why would Detroit do this for a 2nd and a 3rd it just doesn't make sense.

The oilers will pick one of Larsson or Barrie after this year for the right side. Can they even afford Barrie? That probably means Larsson, Bear, Bouchard on the right side next year. left side you have: Nurse, Jones, Russell, Lagesson, and samorukov, with Klefbom's future uncertain. You get to pick 4 of those for the roster. Samorukov is 21 and has spent 3 years developing, he will be able to contribute soon. Broberg has to develop still he isn't NHL ready and wont be for 2 years. The other thing is Samorukov still has 2 years on his ELC they don't have to make the decision yet so they will just watch him develop a bit longer. If samorukov comes into camp next year and does well then russell and Lagesson won't be hard to push to 7D or trade away. In 2 years Darnell also hits free agency so by then there is a good chance they need both samorukov and broberg.

There's only one person that is laughable here. You are delusional. Neal won't be traded for so little of a carrot. He's signed long term, impossible to trade. Loui Eriksson has a better deal much much better at a low salary cost

Yes basically. I still wouldn’t do it if I’m Edmonton though. Don’t need to move Neal it’s just a matter of what’s better for the team. Having Neal in the lineup vs making one of Chiasson, Archibald or Kassian a healthy scratch. They’re paying Neal 5.75M (6.5M if you include the money retained on Lucic) so they’re not gonna have him sit in the press box they want him playing potentially giving him an increase in value even if it’s by the slightest of margins. Just a waste to keep him on the 4th line cause I honestly don’t see him outplaying anyone on the roster for a spot unless it’s on the PP.

Well if you would rather have Eriksson then all the power to you but if I’m a rebuilding team like Detroit I take Neal. He can still produce even if it is in a limited role on the PP. it’s not like Detroit is gonna be anywhere near competitive for the next 3 seasons anyway. And realistically the goal wouldn’t be to keep Neal. It would be to flip him with retention at the TDL or offseason and maybe hope for a buyout before his final year on the deal.

I’d do it from Detroit. I wouldn’t touch the original offer though.

Severe underrating of one Dmitri Samorukov in this thread. He's worth a lot, bookmark this page and we'll revisit in 5 years.

The Oilers were reportedly offered a 1st for him after he lead his team to the Memorial Cup.

Which is fine and I understand that, I was just saying Samorukov and a late round 1st isn't enough for Detroit to take Neal and give up a 2nd and a 4th. The trade as is isn't going to happen and I'm fine with that it wasn't my idea.
