Kings say no.

Their franchise defenseman 5.5 retained, their 2C who would be a 1C if Byfield wasn't drafted, and two 2nds for an overpaid overrated winger?

Why do you people keep giving others more reasons not to take Leafs fans seriously, like ever...

Doughty currently posts worse results than Justin Holl

No joke or exaggeration or anything I'm dead serious

Factoring in deployment and situation and whatnot

He was always overrated and... now he's declining 😐

Halloween may be over but that contract is a GHOUL

Why would Detroit retain $5.5m on Doughty for the next 7 years? Detroit already has 6 years of dead money on the books on Justin Abdelkader. Detroit isn't doing the Leafs any favors besides both Marner's cap hit and Doughty's cap hit are almost the same. So basically Toronto gets rid of Marner's nearly $11 million cap hit and then Detroit eats Doughty's $11 million cap hit by half to $5.5m for 7 more years no thanks not doing the Leafs any favors even for that offer.

Detroit declines. Even if we receive solid compensation, we'd have to retain 5.5 mil for 7 years. That really hurts our ability to build a contender long term as we won't be able to spend to the cap.

The Trade in a nutshell for the Leafs and the Kings
Leafs: Lose Marner (one of the best playmaker in the league, with a decent defensive game, who's hockey IQ is off the charts, and already has a 94 point season at only 23), Liljegren who's going to be a solid top 3 d-man, Brooks (who's not really worth anything, but whatever), 2 seconds (2 players that have top 9, maybe even top 6 upside, especially since Dubas is awesome at drafting). They get Doughty, who sucks now and eat 4.5 million of his salary for 7 years. In conclusion, our offence and future is screwed, and our defence is slightly better.
The Kings add Marner to their roster and setting up a potential dynasty in 5 years, while losing arguably the WORST contract in the league and Vilardi (who has top 6 upside, with mediocre skating and is injury-prone).

You can't argue with facts.

For that package, Yzerman should be fired if he said no

EDIT: I just realized it is 7 years, why are the Kings so mindbogglingly stupid?

That's not what he said, he's said on multiple occasions even recently that Doughty is the best defenseman in the league.

Not saying I think he still is, but if you watched him play playoff teams or rival teams he was the best defenseman on the ice. Games are still available to watch so knock yourself out if you don't believe me.

Only knock on Doughty was his effort in the games that did not matter. Like being on a rebuilding team playing rebuilding teams. That's unacceptable.

If you want to talk about points, then let's do it:

5 points in 5 games 5 times last season
6 points in 5 games 1 time last season

Yes, I am talking about Doughty.

Because Doughty is still good, he is their franchise defenseman, and they need to sell tickets?

Kings are fairly set at top 6 RW and have enough assets to trade for a cheaper one than Marner if Simontaival doesn't pan out.

They have Grans and Faber, but neither are good enough to fill Doughtys hole, ever. Certainly not now.

I'm not even going to talk about the two 2nds and the top 6 center that was in the proposal because that's just ridiculous. It makes no sense for the Kings.

Everybody wants to say Doughty is horrible yet Leafs fans still want him in their top 4 because they know deep down he is still elite.

Doughty leaving prime at 31 "franchise defender"
Marner entering prime at 23 "overpaid overrated"

That really does seem like disingenuous wording use

Marner at 90 points yearly. Doughty declining in all regards. At worst one might say they're equal right now? One has a huge contract until 38. Thirty eight 😐

The list of elite 35+ year olds in NHL history is like Gordie Howe and a handful of other players... with most players declining heavily around then at best.

Mitch only in his late 20s when his contract ends

I hope everyone can be genuine here and argue directly from evidence, no need to skew things

You can just watch the games I recommended or take McDavid's word.

NHL just ranked Doughty at #15 sorry bud...
