2 Olympic gold metals isn’t nothing 560+ goals isn’t nothing and 110 game winning goals isn’t nothing, he was grossly underrated throughout his career but I can see your argument he was never truly elite but he was a super star for San Jose and did done great things in his career.
Olympic gold medal winners 2010: Dan Boyle, Brent Seabrook, Danny Heatley, Brendan Morrow, Rick Nash, Mike Richards, Eric Staal. 2014 Team Canada had: Mike Smith, Dan Hamhuis, Jay Bouwmeester, Marc Eduard Vlasic, Matt Duchene, Patrick Sharp, Chris Kunitz, Rick Nash, Jeff Carter. That's not even including a bunch of players who have far better resumes that may not even get in like Jamie Benn.
The only reason he has those goal/point/GWG totals is because he played 1700+ games. That all links back to my whole point which is that his only claim to the hall of fame is on the fact that he played so many games.
I completely think he will get in, but I don't think he should.
Also some of those players I mentioned have strong resumes too because Seabrook and Sharp both won 3 cups, Heatley was an elite NHLer for a while, Nash had a hockey, Staal had some high point seasons + a cup, and Kunitz had 4 cups and a top 10 point finish
