Description
So after Alzner's signing bonus is paid his actual salary this season is only $1.5M. If he wants to play in the NHL this year, he could likely sign somewhere for ~$1M and he would not be out much. Next year he would be leaving $3.5M on the table though, but assuming MTL would buy him out anyways he would only actually be out $2.333M. If he is betting on himself to play in the NHL again maybe he thinks he can get a decent follow up contract.

Kovalchuk left $4.25M on the table for next year to leave LA, then he revived his career in MTL and got traded to a contender in Washington. Bogosian only played 19 games with Buffalo and then terminated what was left of his contract that paid him $6M this season, he then signed with TB and won the Stanley Cup. Seems to have worked out nicely for these two, maybe Alzner would look to them as examples?

Don't come at me with the "there's no way" comments. I'm just putting the idea out there, Kovalchuk and Bogosian both did it this year, if there was ever a time Alzner would consider it, it would be this year due to his contract structure. I'm not saying he will do it, it's just a thought.

The Paquette trade is cool. MTL gets a gritty 4th line quebecer. TB gets cap space. Hudon gets a fresh start. Lindgren is good goalie depth for TB, i think they should trade McElhinney for cap space and sign Lundqvist for $700k + performance bonuses. Lindgren would then be nice depth to have behind Lundqvist. TB has three 7th round picks and MTL has none in 2021 so added TB's 7th which could very well be the last pick in the draft anyways. More stanley cup experience to go with Edmundson and Allen!

Even if the Alzner thing doesn't happen MTL would still have enough cap space to do this, although they wouldn't have money to play with at the deadline.

I can't think of a team where he'd get a NHL job. Why give up 5 mil to play in the AHL for 700K????

If only he didn't have that one year left with $3,5M total salary...there's no way he'd just leave that on the table and leave. He's not an idiot.

I get what you're saying, but I think there's a more realistic option: Habs could trade Alzner to a bottom-feeder after bonuses are paid in full. Alzner then gets paid only $1.5M this year but counts almost $4M towards reaching cap floor. He can play 6D on a bad team, no problem. He was actualy not that bad during last training camp!

And next year, he can either be bought out or whatever...

So I'd do something like Alzner + a 2020 4th to Ottawa for a 2021 5th. Or he can even be packaged with a B prospect for a better return...

Didn't Berglund walk away from $12.5m? It's not completely out of reason for Alzner to walk away from the rest of his deal if he's unhappy playing in the AHL.

Think Berglund had some mental health issues in the background of that decision...he was ready to leave the whole sport to get himself together. Nothing like that with Alzner's situation has been pointed out. He seems content with playing in AHL as well.

I think Staal trade would be a comparable. I think Mtl would have to add a 2nd with Alzner. Maybe Alzner, 2nd, 4th for future considerations or something.

I would do that for sure, and maybe its possible. But I think the ask would be more like a 2nd round pick, so unless MTL has something planned with the cap space this year, I just wouldn't bother as its not really all that necessary at the moment.

And Kovalchuk walked away from $4.25M, and Bogosian walked away from ~$4.5M.

Unfortunately yeah, Alzner seems pretty content playing in the AHL the last two years. Either he just doesn't care, or he is waiting for the right time (now?). In the end it comes down to how bad does Alzner want to play in the NHL?

Kovalchuk and Bogosian obviously wanted it enough.

"Hey Alzner I know youve been stuck in the AHL and cant even manage to break one of the weakest left sides in the league but would you do us a favour and not take all the money your owed? No of course you wont get another chance at playing in the league you blow and everyone knows it dont be silly Karl"
