Signing Hoffman for that term would be a mistake. I'm of the opinion that the flat cap will get most UFAs interested in shorter term contracts for the sake of cashing in in 2-3 years. The Isles have shown they're true contenders. I wouldn't be shocked if Hoffman (or ideally, Hall), thinks they can join the Isles for a 2-3 year stint, inflate their numbers playing next to Barzal, win a Cup, then cash in with another team for that juicy 7 years to retirement payday deal that all UFAs want.
As far as Wahlstrom is concerned, I'm fine letting him marinate for another year. Let him build up more chemistry with Holmstrom (this last year's camp they looked SO good together), Iskakhov, etc. I don't think this is another Bellows or Dal Colle case with Wahlstrom, everyone knows he's only in Bridgeport because there's just not room for him on a Trotz roster at this moment.
All critiques aside, this is a plausible and amazing roster. I'm not blown away by a Parise-Barzal-Hoffman line, but both can score goals and that's what we need right now. I'd prefer Parise-Barzal-Hall, we're so close and we should just go for it, but this would still do for a 1st line. No desire to break up the 2nd line from the playoffs. And finally, that 3rd line is scary. It's basically having two 2nd lines, and since the Isles love to put their 4th line against the opponent's top line, this effectively means the other team's bottom 6 is playing Top 6 forwards the entire game.
On a final note, you're damn good at finding creative ways to shed cap. I love that Kesler deal.
