Russel would barely get you a 5th rounder

Russell's value is negative a 3rd or 4th round pick, not positive a 2nd lmao

I would think Vancouver has a significantly better chance at signing Pietrangelo then these Oilers. The Oilers have a lot of young pieces. Not sure that defense is the problem here, especially with guys like Bouchard and Broberg on the way plus whatever they decide to do with their 2020 1st round pick. I would think Edmonton's biggest offseason needs are goaltending (and I don't think Jack Campbell is the answer) and a top-6 winger to play with McDavid.

These moves would more then likely guarantee a Nugent Hopkins departure for next year unless you decide to move one of Nurse or Klefbom.

Leafs like Campbell as their cost-effective backup, highly unlikely they deal him unless the deal blows them away. And one year of Adam Larsson is not blowing anyone away. Leafs pass.

And Ottawa is not taking on your cap dump and giving you a 2nd rounder in a deep draft. They're a rebuilding team with a notoriously cheap owner, you would literally have to bribe them to do this (I.e. you send a 2nd with Russell they send you a 7th).

While it’s completely foolish to suggest russell has negative value. 2nd rounder is asking a lot of a team he’s unlikely to waive for. Interesting idea with the leafs trade but even tho larsson is worth far more I’m not sure they would want to pull trigger on that while exploring replacing Andersen they just don’t have the cap to replace both.
Problem with replacing pending ufas with a long term big money deal is that’s money coming straight out of extension funds that’s a contract that will continue to subtract from the roster threw out the entire flat cap era. Just not a good time to make a move like that.

Slight disagreement about Russell. He's ok as a bottom pairing defenseman, but $4M for that role is painful in the flat cap era. If he gets moved, I'd expect a deal like Bjugstad's at most.

Alex Pietrangelo would want 7 x $10.5m to 7 x $11.0m to sign with Edmonton there's noway in high taxed Canada he signs that deal he wants 8 x $9m just to stay in St Louis he's not taking less to play in Edmonton.

He’s still effective option very versatile blocks ton of shots. Factor in the offseason will come before any clear indications on how next season will be played questions like fans attending games won’t be answered most teams will have internal budgets so russell only being owed 1.5 for what he does will be more attractive than ever. It’s a small silver lining to a crappy situation.

EDM has to pay to dump Russell to OTT

Doesnt matter how useful you think he is, what matters is that OTT doesnt have a problem reaching the floor so you have to convince Melnyk to spend the extra money.

The reason every EDM fan has Russell going to OTT is because hes a cap dump. If hes not, sell him to another team and get told no by their fans instead

Goalies have a lot longer playing time. Especially nowadays.

That's true to an extent, but Campbell is what he is, a back-up capable of filling in as a starter for a short period. He's isn't going to be a 50 game goalie leading your team to the playoffs.

I think the bigger problem would be the lack of cap space. The teams that can accommodate his cap hit aren't expected to be very good next season, so trying out prospects will be more appealing, and cheaper both salary and cap-wise.
I could a specific scenario where Detroit might be willing to take him on. If DeKeyser is still injured next season and they strike out in Free Agency, they might be willing to bring someone like Russell in to man the middle pairing. Although I'd still think they'll pay little to nothing to get him, like the Bjugstad deal. Not the best option for the team, but an option nonetheless.

Logic is flawed. Russell is a cap dump to teams that spend to the cap which Ottawa is not. The reason he gets traded to Ottawa frequently is because he’s very good value for the money left owing. 1.5 million for a veteran d that’s among league leaders a year in year out in blocked shots capable of playing 15 min or so a night on either side sounds like a heck of a deal doesn’t it. Reality is it’s a bad idea because he has a limited no trade clause and hard to imagine Ottawa not on top of that list.

He won't have to be a 50 game starter. Look around the league. Teams are platooning starters. 1a 1b.
