I doubt NJ add a prospect to that trade.

Also Fehervary is above Alex right now.

Yeah, I don't see how a late 1st + Kempny gets you Palmieri retained + a good prospect as you suggest. You'd likely have to add to the current deal as WSH to get Palmieri retained like that -- NJD isn't adding.

It’s Kempny + B prospect + 1st for Palmieri. You read it wrong wink

Yes. It is still a Cup contender, even after overpaying Pinho and letting Sprong and DIllon walk to overpay for a backup goalie and a #3D. smile

Since Tor fans keep offering Johnsson for Jensen, how many more goals does Palmieri score on a line with Vrana and Backstrom than Johnsson does, if either can bump Oshie? Palmieri has a 30 goal season under his belt, but Johnsson is five years younger, speaks Swedish, and doesn't cost a 1st round pick, which the Caps can then use or trade to make a longer-term addition.

Johnsson's also coming off major knee surgery, so he carries some significant risk. Pretty sure he's a LW too.

True. So there could be a learning curve, moving over there. And Johnsson has only scored on a 20 goal pace, career. My question wasn't a rhetorical. I think Palmieri gets ten more goals than Johnsson in that spot in year one, but in year two Palmieri walks, but Johnsson keeps getting 20 goals. Also, in year one, if Johnsson's coming off an injury, he probably starts on line 3 with Eller and Hagelin (and again, someone plays their off wing), while Oshie stays on Backstrom's RW where he was on pace for 31 goals if last year had 82 games.

Palmieri is awesome. But keeping him long term would be tricky, and the Caps usually draft pretty well in the first round.

That wasn’t meant as a defense of Palmieri vs Johnsson, I’m actually not really a fan of either option. If the Caps are gonna acquire a Top 9 winger, my choice would actually be Calle Jarnkrok. He’s signed for two more years at 2M, has experience with Laviolette, has experience at center so they Caps wouldn’t have to keeping playing Boyd or Dowd as a 3C every time a center is hurt, and his ice time and production dropped off when Lavi left so he might be a buy-low candidate. He also PKs, so if Hagelin has to be moved because of a cap crunch he can fill in there.

Jarnkrok would probably cost at least your 2020 1st imo. Kinda another Coleman

That’s possible, but Coleman was traded at the deadline when prices are always a bit inflated, and he had 21 goals in 57 games at the time. I’d offer Siegenthaler and a 3rd, personally.

In the last game against Carolina last year, Siegenthaler logged six hits and two blocks. This year at Calgary, he had a game with five of each. With a coach who asks him to be more consistent about those little things, I think Siegenthaler could quickly be more valuable than Jarnkrok, who is five years older than him and coming off a season of 15 goals in 62 games. Granted, with penalty-killing alone, he's making a mark and Poile might consider a one for one.

I don't care so much about hit totals, I care about using his size to win puck battles along the boards and control the crease, neither of which he does often enough. A perfect example is this goal by Mitchell Stephens in the round robin. Stephens is an AHL/NHL tweener giving up about 2-3 inches and 20 lbs to Siegs, but he catches Siegenthaler, outmuscles him along the boards to force a turnover, and then sets up in front of the net for a deflection while Siegs goes for a stick lift instead of playing the body. I think anyone can go rack up hits, but using your size effectively on defense is a much rarer skill set.

That's a point well made, but have you ever been blind-sided into a wall? There's just not a lot you can do about what you don't see coming. Does he need to learn to one-time that puck up the boards? Yes. Is he going to be almost as good on defense as Kempny at half the cap hit? Here's hoping.

eta: the Caps get into a patter where they build up a terrific team, and during the regular season they score 250 goals, give up 200, and they don't worry about any of those 200 because they know that overall their team is better and they're winning. Then in the playoffs, when it's a coin toss, they look for a couple guys to blame for the last couple goals of the season, and they start tearing down their really good teams over dumb luck.
