I might be overtinking it here, but do you think there is any chance that Montreal is using him as a useful player for a year, that they can also leave exposed to the expansion draft.
Montreal can protect 3 Defenders.
LD- Ben Chiarot(Protect one of the two or defer to the two scenarios below)
LD- Brett Kulak(Protect one of the two or defer to the two scenarios below)
LD- Alexander Romanov(if a good/Great 20-21 season 2nd liner)
RD- Shea Weber (MTL should protect)
RD- Jeff Petry (MTL should protect)
RD-Josh Brook(if a good/Great 20-21 season 3rd liner)Does not need to be protected less than 3 years
I am hoping that Montreal does one of two things if not both. Use our assets to obtain a top line LD or to acquire a top 4 Defence prospect that in NHL ready and does not need to be protect during the expansion draft.
Karl Alzner, cant be exposed because he will not have the minimum NHL games in the last 2 years.
If Edmundson has a decent season and a good contract due to the situation we are in with all sports, due to the pandemic opening up lower value short term contracts. He might be an attractive pick for Seattle.
This will lets the Canadiens have a Defender to expose to the draft that has the required games and contract length.
Defenders I am leaving out
Mete - Think he will be added to any package trade that is trying to upgrade our roster)
Juulsen - might not meet Minimum NHL games
Fleury - might not meet Minimum NHL games
