How I Think Davidson May Go For in UFA
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Marc, Eric, and even Jesper make sense. I just cannot see Waddell letting Jordan get to that point. Jordan is everything Rod was as a player so it makes sense to have him for a Rod coached team</div></div>
The Canes are notorious for successfully making tough decisions to let teams overpay in UFA for their players sometimes. I genuinely think that the only two must-signs in the organization (as far as UFAs go) are Aho and Slavin. Every other pending UFA in the next two seasons has some degree of flexibility to pivot away from.

I think so, too. I just see both Chicago and Buffalo as candidates to sign some significant veteran influence in UFA. The Staal and Fast contracts, in particular, do have a "bad team tax" attached to them.

I was thinking that Chicago might be a candidate to hand out overpays to some veterans in order to transition Bedard and their kids to the NHL. The Staals and Fast seem like ideal candidates.

The Argument in Favor of a 10M Lafreniere Offer Sheet
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tonyhzs</b></div><div>I'd be ok with it being a '24 2nd. Unless someone falls or Stevie has a guy in mind for the NYI pick, I'd be ok sacrificing that 1st. Yes, this draft is deep, and a pick at 20 might be more like picking 10 in a normal draft, those picks are almost always high risk/reward (Caulfield) or low risk lower floor (Rasmussen). Laf is looking for a change of scenery, but he might just be a good middle 6 guy for a ceiling. I'd almost rather swap Zadina for Laf, and give up the NYI pick conditionally depending on both players' performance.</div></div>
The key is if you think that Laf would prefer a rebuilding Detroit over a true contender in Carolina, particularly because unlike the Wings, the Canes can afford to trade two 1sts with how low their picks are likely to be in 2024 and 2025.

I would. It's worth the shot just like KK was worth the shot. The swing is even larger than they did for KK due to the picks involved BUT the offensive upside is higher.

It's called a CapFriendly bidding war lol. I'm just pointing out that the Canes CAN seriously build a poison-pill RFA contract, not necessarily that it's the right idea.

Vancouver Canucks signed Christian Wolanin (2 Years / $775,000 AAV)
Canucks want to have their own version of Chatfield. Understandable considering that Benning utterly squandered him in favor of Tucker...Poolman. Wolanin's a very good bet to continue giving good bottom-pair play, however.

Edvinsson is worth more than Jarvis without having a full NHL season to his name? Hmmmm...that's certainly a take.

Canes In the Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JoeROFLCOPTER</b></div><div>Ah thought he was 2C.
I still doubt they trade their LHD of the future for a RW when they can draft one in this year's draft (who's maybe not as good as Jarvis, but still pretty damn good).</div></div>
Nikishin was the real wildcard in my trade proposal. He's also a LHD prospect and has had one of the best KHL seasons that a defenseman has ever had at only 21. Essentially the trade was that the Wings would get a for-sure offensive upgrade in Jarvis while the Canes get a for-sure defensive successor to our pending UFA classes, while swapping a couple of very high upside wildcards in Berggren and Nikishin and Detroit getting an extra 1st because Nikishin isn't allowed to leave the KHL until 2025.

Canes In the Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JoeROFLCOPTER</b></div><div>Yeah I mean Jarvis and Kasper would be fighting for 2C in two years and I'd personally lean towards Kasper.
Trading away a top 10 prospect and a decent middle 6 winger for a 2nd pairing defenseman and Jarvis just don't make much sense for the Wings.</div></div>
Jarvis would IMO be the 1st line RW long-term, not the 2nd line 2C. Jarvis only briefly played C in the AHL but he naturally slots at RW. Kasper would get the 2C spot. That's why I thought that he'd be a good fit in Detroit. Jarvis and Raymond would be an excellent 1-2 punch.

This isn't a question of would you want to. The question is if they HAVE to. The Canes have well enough cap space to theoretically offer-sheet Lafreniere in the $8.4M range.

Unless you reach the 4 1sts range then you <strong>have</strong> to match I would think</div></div>
Similarly to what happened to Marc Bergevin, it's a cap question for the Rangers, not an assets question. $8.4M is around the point where the Rangers may not actually be able to match it unless they trade someone like Chytil.

The thing is that a $6.25M offer sheet could theoretically be matched by cap dumping someone like Goodrow. Making the offer sheet in the $8M range forces them to legitimately consider letting him go.

Laf offersheet
I think that it takes more than 1/$6.25M to snag Lafreniere, especially considering that our 1st is extremely late and because I think that GMs learned their lesson from the KK saga. I think that my prior proposal of 1x$8.4M would do it because they would have to trade Kreider or Panarin for them to match it. The Canes could then get Laf to agree to an 8 year contract around $7M/year.

How to Give the Rangers FO a Migraine Headache
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>Frankly, the Rags would have a hard enough time matching a 4mil offer sheet on Laf with guys like Miller at the top of their RFA food chain, and then Chytil after. They also have to figure out the Tarasenko and Kane situations as well.</div></div>
I made it $8.4M because not only do the Canes have the cap space to do so, but because, more than merely the prospect of getting Lafreniere, it forces the Rangers to make a tough choice to trade one of Kreider or Panarin and effectively wipes out a Metro competitor regardless of whether Laf is a Cane or not.

I think that #1 centers are truly that valuable and Detroit has had terrible luck in the upper tiers of the draft for years, being within inches of getting one but consistently getting too low at the draft table to acquire one. A trade like this would IMO be the best way to finally ram one into the lineup.

Canes seem likely to promote Tulsky from within, I think, once Waddell either retires or is promoted upwards (aka. McPhee/McCrimmon or Sakic/MacFarland).
