I am in the camp of the Rangers need a center also. But Max Domi is not the answer.
He's 5'9...is not a full time center, has terrible faceoff numbers...he just isn't an improvement over Strome in the most important areas..just offensively. The Rangers don't lack for goal scoring. Their 2C needs to be a reliable player in his own end who can be deployed to take that tough faceoff with 2 minutes left. A player who can take the burden of defensive zone starts in order to shield Chytil in an important growth year. Domi is not that. He's a nice player with a lot of talent, but he just isn't a fit for what the Rangers need.
Maybe I am wrong and he surprises everyone (doubtful), but what happens if he can't fill the roll? You have ZERO experience behind him to fill the void. You'd have to pray that Chytil can step in and take over. You also don't have room for him on LW, unless your wasting him on the 4th line...so he has no landing spot if he doesn't succeed.
I also don't believe that would be enough for Montreal to be moved to trade him anyway. There has to be a better offer from another team who's bringing him in as a full time LW.
Why are the Sharks, a team clearly in transition, trading for a guy who is 27 years old and about to get paid in the next two years... in exchange for a talented prospect AND a pick?
