Gaudreau walks in 2 years and probably Monahan in 3, and for that you gave up a top 5 prospect in the league, a promising forward, an underrated stay at home dman, and 8OA. Hope the 2 1st round knockouts are worth it

Kings aren't giving up the #35 overall pick for Risto, nor are they giving up the 3rd which becomes a 2nd when Clifford re-signs in Toronto.

They might give up a 2021 3rd for him, but only if you take back Jeff Carter.

Buffalo would be STUPID not to take Carter for Risto. this is exactly the type of trade they should be looking for.

I proposed that trade the other day and got unanimously shot down by Buffalo fans.

If he didn't have the extra year its an easy yes. With so much money due over the next 2 off seasons and cozens coming through it doesn't make sense to take on that commitment unless its someone younger.

buffalo fans may be among the most confusing group on this site.
Eichel has all but put the organization on a shot clock - they are not in a position to waste any more of Eichel's contract.
if they keep cruising along as is they will be going no where. they need to use everything they have to get deeper and more experienced.
however, the group on this site wants to hold on to every pick and prospect they have instead of moving them for usable pieces now.
Jeff Carter has 2 season left at $5.2M, Risto has 2 years at $5.4M - this trade is a wash cap wise and gives Buffalo a 2C to help mold Cozens.

I dont disagree with what you're saying, just the target is off. 36,37 year old carter doesn't keep Eichel from walking. He's not good (neither is Risto granted but my point still stands)

They're better off long and short term moving Risto for cap space and spending it on someone not ancient than trading for Carter with 2 years on his deal

You just said yourself that Risto isn't good anymore. I'm sure the Kings would be willing to give up a 4th rounder or something for him, but they're not going to give up a 2nd and a 3rd.

Id take the 4th and then try to get Copp out of WPG. Better value

Kings would probably consider something like that. It would allow them to trade one of Roy or Walker to Toronto for offensive help.

Yes, Carter for Ristolainen is a virtual wash cap-wise, but note that Risto is owed $10.8 million over the last two years of his contract while Carter is owed all of $4 million over his.

Carter is just going to retire. Also most Buffalo fans dont buy into the analytical garbage which has mostly been debunked in the NHL anyway. We know that Risto is much better than a 3rd and some over the hill center. Analytics are not as important as the online community tries to make it.

I have no problem with you thinking that the trade isn't a good one, but Carter isn't going to retire and leave $4M on the table. He might go to Robidas island if he can't get healthy, but he's not going to walk away from guaranteed salary.

Its been reported, as far back as 2018, that if he was traded away from LA he would just retire to his place in Huntington beach.

NHL insider Bob McKenzie of TSN recently suggested that Carter could be attractive to clubs seeking offense, such as the Boston Bruins or the Arizona Coyotes. Carter has three seasons left on his contract with an affordable $5.27-million cap hit, though in actual dollars he’ll only be owed $7 million over the remainder of the deal. Carter lacks no-trade protection but loves living in Los Angeles and could be unwilling to leave the team, with whom he won two championships in 2012 and 2014.

This is why McKenzie believes retirement could be an option for Carter, though that would result in the Kings paying a $3.75-million salary-cap recapture penalty for each of those final three seasons.

"He doesn’t have no-trade protection, he loves it in L.A. and would love to stay. If he does get traded somewhere he doesn’t want to go, retirement could be an option for him. That’s why he signed that back-diving contract – he’s only leaving $7 million on the table. If he did retire, there is a cap recapture penalty that would hit the LA Kings at $3.75 million in each of the next three years," explained McKenzie on TSN's Insider Trading on Thursday night.

First of all, Carter lives in Manhattan Beach, not Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach is not really a place you want to retire to.

Carter directly and emphatically debunked this rumor at the end of last season. McKenzie floated that as a hypothetical situation showing how Carter could potentially use his contract situation to his advantage if he wanted to nix a trade, but never once suggested that Carter or his camp said that Carter would retire if traded.

Quoting: Jeff Carter
I’ve got three years left on my contract. I want to be an L.A. King. I want to help change things around here, but I don’t have trade protection, so whatever happens, happens. And I never talked about retiring, either. That never came out of my mouth.

LAKI: CARTER: “I WANT TO BE AN L.A. KING”

Anyone that suggests that Carter said he would would retire if traded is either being disingenuous or misunderstood McKenzie's report.

What ever beach its irrelevant. The gist of both reports is that if Carter doesnt like the city he will retire. Why would he come to Buffalo. The city sucks, the perception of the franchise is terrible, the fans are at a breaking point, the media is garbage and treats players like garbage

Because he has a contract and doesn't have a NTC clause. He's also not about to give up $4M in guaranteed salary. He flat out said that he's not going to retire and that "whatever happens, happens." If he gets traded to Buffalo, he will suit up and play for Buffalo.

If you don't want your team to trade for him, that's one thing, but don't say that a trade is impossible by putting words into his mouth.

Hes made 70 mill. You can spin it all you want, he wouldn't even be the 1st player to walk out on the team in the last 2 years. He wouldnt be the 2nd either. Believe me, I live here. If I had 70 mill in the bank, Id pay 4 mill to leave, let alone just walk away from it

That could all be true, but I'm not the one spinning here. Instead I'm going based on what the player said which is "I'm not retiring" and "I don't have trade protection, so whatever happens, happens."

Carter is from London, ON, so Buffalo isn't much of a stretch. He could live in St. Catharines and be a short drive away from "home." For $4M, he has incentive to make it work.
