Description
I went ahead and bought out Hank and Staal just because that is the least ideal situation, i.e.: conservative planning.

If you can find takers for them with deals structured something like this:
Staal (with 50% retained) for 7th rd pick
and/or
Hank (with 50% retained) for 4th/5th rd pick

I would do something like that, otherwise we'll stick with the buyouts. We are not in a position to be paying picks/promising prospects to get rid of those 1 yr remaining contracts.

When it comes to the trade: Nichushkin is the primary target for me (middle 6 fwd can play all situations, only W). Strome is the primary piece going to COL (top 6 fwd can play all situations and C or W)
There are going to be COL fans who say absolutely no way, and NYR fans who say the same, thus I think it is probably close to fair valuation.

Brendan Smith goes at the '21 TDL for a 4th or 5th after a rebound season.
DeAngelo moves to the left to play with Lundkvist and Miller/Trouba are the 2nd pair.

PS: This team is really solid top to bottom.

Strictly from a value point of view, I do not disagree with you.

From a "what fields a better team on the ice for NYR, one that trades those players, or one that retains them?" - I think the answer is the former.

fair point, but in this scenario you have 2.7 million left in space which is enough to keep Lemieux and Strome

Avs decline

Value is interesting but Strome is a bad target for the team, will cost too much, he will take a bloated 1 year deal and head to UFA, he is a 3C, nothing more and htey have Compher for that role.
Nuke is such a good fit, Dont mess whats not broken

Lias will be AHL bound on that avs roster build, if he didnt like that with the Rangers, he wont like that with the Avs.
Lemieux would be a nice add but then youa re just swapping parts that are similar with him and Jost

I think Avs do a bunch of moving their roster around dont really get any better so dont really see the benefit for the move

It is enough to keep Lemieux, but not Strome. He has arbitration rights and easily gets 4+m/1yr.

But again the point isn't strictly value/money/cap. It's, where do those 2 players fit on the roster assuming we traded picks for Nuke/Jost? Strome would fit for sure as 3c (again, he actually doesn't fit cap wise though), while Lemieux, well, he would fit MAYBE as the 4LW, but I personally am pretty happy with Gettinger there.

Unless you're saying, just to not make the trade at all and keep Lemieux/Strome, while not acquiring Nuke/Jost, but again, my point is which team is better AND cheaper, and the answer is, after the trade happens, NYR are a better team on both counts.

yeah I mean no trade at all. I agree the Rangers will be cheaper, but not better. Strome>>Jost and Nichushkin is probably slightly better than Lemieux, but not by much. Lemieux also has a physical edge as you know which is hard to find. What's the point if they're cheaper? As long as they're under the cap.

"Lemieux + Andersson = Nichushkin (slightly favorable to NYR)
Strome = Jost +3rd (slightly favorable to COL)"

Terrible trade for Colorado.

Nichuskin is elite defensively. Lemieux is a downgrade in that role and Lias is an AHLer at this stage. This favours Rangers.

Strome is worth a 2nd because he needs a big raise, and is a career 30-35 point player. I would much rather have Jost + 3rd as we don't need a player like Strome, and in that bottom 6 role Jost is much cheaper to keep around.

Overall this doesn't fill a need for Colorado, and just removes a player who fits the team extremely well. At best it's a sideways move, but at worst it's just a pointless downgrade for the sake of shuffling the deck.

My thoughts on Strome...

Whilst Strome does have the speed and playmaking ability to keep up with fast players, it seems to me like Strome is a sub-0.5ppg player up to now who's had one inflated year while riding shotgun with Panarin. There are many tell-tale signs of this being a one-off career year for him, including:

- His career average is 0.52ppg. This season he's at 0.84 ppg.
- His last 6 seasons his points totals were 28, 30, 34, 35, 35, and 59....... Not hard to spot the outlier.
- This season he is being spoon-fed minutes with sheltered offensive minutes with 54.6 oZS% and 19:35 ATOI, by far the highest in his career.
- Shooting % in 2 years with Rangers is 15.4%, which is 5.1% higher than his career average.
- 104.4 PDO this season, which is 9th highest in the league among forwards with at least 50 games.
- He has raked in PP points playing with Panarin, Zibanejad, and Deangelo, with 14 PP assists. Before this season he had only 26 PP assists in 7 seasons combined. Needless to say it's likely that he sees a big drop in assists if Colorado acquired him as he wouldn't get PP1 time at Colorado.

All of those combined are signs of a player with heavily inflated stats, and it's unlikely that he'd be anything more than a 35-40 point player without PP1 time and tons of offensive ice time.

He's basically an offensive 3C that depends a lot on linemates for production. Based on the stats above I doubt GM's are going to be lining up to acquire him to be the sucker that gives him a raise, particularly as there's every chance that he reverts back to his Edmonton production if he doesn't get a lot of heavily sheltered offensive minutes next to a superstar.

Due to the flat cap it's also going to be a buyers market, and so I don't think you're going to get any offers as high as you think you'll be getting for Strome. And on top of that anyone who acquires him is going to be paying him based on 1 year of heavily-inflated production.

That all said, whilst Colorado don't really need an offensive C, perhaps he'd be a fit as a complimentary winger on the 2nd line as the playmaker for two shooters in Kadri and Burakovsky. But I feel like that would be pushing it. Burakovsky is already a player who needs some sheltering, and that line has worked best with a defensively-strong winger like Donskoi or Nichuskin winning puck-battles on the forecheck, and so I don't really see Strome as a perfect fit on that line given that he's not really great defensively (certainly not when compared to Nichuskin who is elite defensively).

Maybe Colorado would consider Strome if the ask was a 2nd + prospect and if he's willing to sign for like $3.5m-ish x 2-3 years. But even then it feels like we're just acquiring a warm body that doesn't really fit the style of player Sakic tends to like in bottom 9 roles (i.e. defensively strong and excellent underlying stats).

I would not say that Lemieux + Andersson = Nichushkin. Andersson basically has no value right now, and Nichushkin is well beyond Lemieux.

Super weird trade that doesnt make much sense.
Nichuskin is very valuable to COL right now as they are cup contenders and making this trade seems to push COL backwards.
Strome is the only piece of interest (Lemieux doesnt move the needle and Andersson is creeping towards bust territory).
