Description
STAY THE COURSE!

Why? We KNOW the cap for the next 3 years. This assumes we can't trade Maatta, which I believe we can. It also assumes Smith goes to Rockford. I'm not 100% sure we can move him without giving up good assets. Sending him down can actually HELP the younger guys become professionals.

Strome and Kubalik take 1 year deals. There will be extra cap next year with Saad and Smith coming off the books next year. I really don't think the threat of an offersheet is a serious one this offseason. They typically aren't anyway, but especially this year with close to all the teams scrambling to figure out their cap situations.

Pius Suter will EARN a spot in the middle six. I think his style of play best matches Saad/Toews, but I just can't break up that Kubalik/Toews/Saad line. It's what I've wanted since the start of the 2019 season and it's really good.

I also like the they're rolling for the EDM playoff series. It allows for Kane to bounce between Strome/Nylander and Dach/Debcrincat. HOWEVER, I do think Pius Suter will bounce Nylander down to the 4th line. Absolutely nothing against Nylander. I think he just needs more time to develop. Keep skating hard. His time will come.

As for in net. I'd prefer to sign Crow vs any other option, but I understand if we need to go Talbot/Greiss...that's still better than losing assets in a trade.

I'm growing more interested in drafting Sanderson as I do more research. He won't be ready for quite some time, but He's looking like the real deal every time I watch his games. If the Hawks are at pick 10 I'd be ok with Sanderson/Quinn/Lundell. If they go Askarov, I'm not going to pout because they need a prospect goalie with starter potential...I just don't think it's a wise choice of a top 10 pick.

IDK about that. There were a few times last night that Kane was upset at him jumping off sides stopping the rush. I think he's a solid player and he 100% is NOT the lazy player that BUF fans were making him out to be, but Nylander's actually produced better when he's AWAY from Kane. It's weird, but true.

***EDIT*** This is a good thing by the way! I like it when players aren't required to be next to super stars in order to produce. He's actually the BEST when he pairs with Kampf as his centerman.

I liked Nylander a lot last night. He was aggressive and made some good plays on the forecheck, and the two times I saw him go offside, one was not his fault because Kane made an extra move with the puck which completely screwed Nylander over and the other one was because of a board battle, which is fairly common. Nylander made a couple great passes to Kane that unfortunately he couldnt bury, but he very well could have been all over the scoresheet yesterday

Last night was the first time in 4.5 months that any of them played hockey against a real opponent, I'm not sure where you heard that Kane was frustrated with Nylander going offsides, but if he was it seems unwarranted in my opinion. I only saw it happen once last night and I think it was a bad call by the ref.

The sample size is too small to say that Nylander produces better away from Kane, but if you don't want to play him with Kane then you should easily play him with Strome/Dach and Debrincat. My point being that there's no way he will become a top 6/9 player if we continue to bury him on the 4th line.

Unpopular opinion, the Kane-Strome goal yesterday was impossible if Nylander didn’t move the puck out of our defensive zone to Kane.

Not a fan of dumping both Maatta and Koekkoek for nothing after very solid seasons. Even in a flat cap world, teams still have needs and if they're smart enough, the Hawks can be the one to fill it.

Otherwise, all the roster stuff is fine, I agree with a lot of it

I made an edit to my previous which you may not have seen yet. I believe when "Player A" can make a line better...that's the best thing in the world. He makes Kampf's line better. This isn't a knock on him at all! It's a HUGE kudos! This makes the entire team better. 100% agreed and understood on the sample size.

100% agreed. I'm trying to be the MOST conservative I can here. Drake's not here. 4k isn't here. Matta should get a nice return IMO. Hawks should 110% be able to do better than the team above.

I don’t disagree with your description at all. It will be a tough offseason if you have Strome, Kubalik, AND Saad all needing new contracts. I think you lose some value in needing to trade someone’s RFA or UFA (Saad) rights because teams know you can only afford 2 or 3. Also what if one or both RFAs go off next year? Another 60-70 pts for Strome and 30 goals for Kubalik? It might be wise if they’ll accept multiple years and maybe offsetting years like 2 to Kubalik and 3 to Strome. That way you deal with one at a time. (Though Dach and Boker are also up in 2 years). F...my head hurts lol

Lol, yeah. It's a tough call. With Saad and Smith coming off the books that ~$10M available for just raises above the $3.5M already signed. It's hard to predict the future. Maybe Saad still wants to go for the money? That's almost certainly not going to be the Hawks. Who knows? Those are good problems to have if one of the goes off.

A.) we can take it and B.) the following year we would have to pay $1M too, which I don't want. C.) I really do think he can help develop the younger guys in Rockford to be professionals. If he doesn't show up then suspend him and he gets removed all together.

Just buy him out and take the $1M hit both this year and next.

I don't like that option personally. I gave three benefits to not doing that. It eliminates the additional optionality we get next year too. So 4 I guess. The $1M this year isn't worth it IMO.

A) We need the cap space especially considering room for bonuses...not sure what the carry over is ($1.2Mish I believe); spending $2.1M in Rockford is not smart for a team against the cap
B) Okay
C) Okay

A trumps B and C IMO

I hear ya. Cheers! We'll just have to agree to disagree. I view my method as ripping off a band-aid.
