Not much changes due to tight cap space

Description
1. I had a dilemma of picking a good 1B goalie next season or getting a good 3rd line centre, the two voids the oilers have which is impossible for both to fill. So I had to pick between signing Khudobin, or signing Soderberg, I went with the latter. The dude can kill penalties and is productive than Sheahan.

2. Unless they trade or buy out Neal next season, or hope for a couple million dollar cap hit increase, they’re not gonna be able to sign Benson, Yams, and Nuge to long term deals. This is why I was only able to sign Soderberg for a year since a contract has to come off the books to resign Yamo.

3. After the 2020 season, with Smith and Soderberg becoming UFA’s, Ken Holland’s dilemma comes back to hunt him. What do you think Oilers fans should Holland prioritize? A 3rd line centre or a solid 1B goalie?

4. The start of 2021 season is when Holland will have to work his magic due to the big signings. We’ll see how that goes!

Benning's worth at least a third round pick and a B-prospect.

Benson likely doesnt make the opening night roster, so will likely see a second contract very similar to what Jones was extended for. Two more cheap years. The Pouliot buyout expires after this season: if RNH is expected to make Kevin Hayes esque money on his next deal, that expiring buyout covers the bill sufficiently.

If the team is expecting to resign Larsson in the $3.5-$4M window, resigning Yamamoto effectively means dumping Neal in some manner. If Puljujarvi is insistent on still never coming back to Edmonton, and we know that Seattle is likely wanting to poach Jones, there probably exists some package involving both young men where Seattle takes on Neal's contract and Edmonton still manages a quality draft pick out of it.

Just swap Benning and Kerfoot in a small package amd dont sign Soderberg

PS. I doubt CBJ has any interest in Russell

Leafs pass on that as well, they'd be left too thin down the middle.
My assumption is they simply find a taker for Johnsson and call it a day

Benning can get a 3rd, or a 2nd. Benson won’t get much money, because he hasn’t proved to be that good, and I don’t even know if he will be up next year. You could probably sign Soderberg for 2.5-3M, after all he is only a 3c and people will mainly be targeting Haula because he is the best 3c in free agency. I would also sign Bear to a short term contract at about 2M, so if you add that up you have about 4.5M in extra I believe. It can be done, you just can’t way overpay everybody.

I'm assuming the Russell proposal is actually a "to any team that would accept", because the Jackets wouldn't go anywhere near that - not without a heck of a lot more bribery, anyways.

Kerfoot played LW a bunch in Toronto. I'm not sure why you think they couldn't trade him due to center depth.

I think Holland would want a defensively adequate 3C who can kill penalties well so Nugent-Hopkins and Draisaitl don't have to. Kerfoot doesn't qualify.

I don't mind him playing there as it's more support for Jones. But yes, we hear a lot of comments on this board about how much Larsson sucks.

Without russell and demoting Larsson I just see a d that is mobile but will get pushed around and very little confidence that anyone else can clear bodies from in front of the net. Nurse can play with an edge but he isn’t that guy every night like larsson is.

they have 25 mil in cap space available. the best nuge can get in 7 mil. Yams in gonna get five mil so the remaining cap space is 13 mil. benson at best is gonna get 1.5 mil so 11.5 mil is left which is a lot

given the flat cap, there is a chance benson is gonna make the opening night roster. They basically have to choose between ennis and sheahan and if they do the latter, benson has a chance of playing.

They don't have to resign either Ennis or Sheahan. Its likely both of them are going to price themselves out of Edmonton.

If the team itself recognizes that the flat cap is going to prevent any massive upgrades to the team - especially if they keep Neal - then they'll likely bet on the special teams again. It's likely they keep Chiasson and run him on the top unit with Neal on the second unit.

Holland is also notoriously patient with prospects. The only rookie I'd see making the team would be Bouchard if they don't resign Green. That'll strictly be due to him being too good for the AHL, not because they couldn't afford anyone else

Benson may not make the opening lineup, he for sure later in the season, will be called up

If Edmonton's ran right up against the cap, they might not have a choice. Remember, there's going to be anywhere between $400-$700k levied against the Oilers next season if they make it past Chicago.

I just posted an AGM to show what the team could look like in this scenario

This is why I traded Chiasson. The oilers were ranked 25-26th I believe on 5v5 scoring. I was just looking for a subtle change on the bottom six to see who can be if not more, be just as productive as Chiasson in 5v5 scoring. The only replaceable winger on the bottom was Chiasson so I went with him.

I think Yamo can replace him on the PP, or I went with the wildcard Kassian. He doesn’t kill penalties so here’s to hoping he becomes a net presence on the PP. That 3.2 mil contract has to be valued.

Chiasson can be moved don’t need two pp specialists in bottom 6. Oilers have plenty of options for pp I don’t mind seeing them try a few different looks.

Holland might like to keep youth out of lineup longer than most gms but keep in mind Mcloed nearly made the team this year. Considering him an option is far from being far fetched. Benson earned a look very much wouldn’t rule out for opening night. If the AHL is a no go then I’d go ahead and ink them in the line up.

He tried different things, no harm in it.
That doesn't mean the team should toss away centers unless they're getting one back.
Outside of Matthews, Tavares and Spezza they don't have any natural and capable guys to do the job. Gauthier is meh, Engvall is better at wing, and ..... thats it. Even with Kerfoot on the team if the injury bug hits a couple of your Cs you're in trouble because there's nobody on the Marlies to help either.
They need to add at that position, not trade it away.
