I feel the Penguins & Leafs could be good trade partners this offseason. With a flat salary cap for 2020-21, lots of contending teams are going to need to make changes to their roster so that they have a 22 man lineup that cap compliant.
The Leafs are in a difficult spot. No cap space & a lack of balance throughout the roster. They’ll be forced to move one of their star forwards (most likely Marner). In a flat cap league, there won’t be teams willing to offer a lot of value in return, so they’ll have to sell low.
It has been emphasized that the Penguins need to add a top 6 right winger to their lineup since Hornqvist is getting old & his game is declining, while Simon & Sheary are not good enough for that role.
The trade I have in mind is: Patric Hornqvist, Sam Lafferty, Jack Johnson & Chad Ruhwedel For Mitch Marner (390K Retained Salary).
The Pens get their top line RW & Toronto adds grit, depth & defensive defencemen.
If this trade goes through, the Pens could have a potential lineup that looks like this next season:
Guentzel (6) - Crosby (8.7) - Marner (10.5)
Zucker (5.5) - Malkin (9.5) - Rust (3.5)
Simon (1.85) - McCann (3.25) - Rodrigues (1.75)
ZAR (1) - Blueger (.75) - Tanev (3.5)
Dumoulin (4.1) - Letang (7.25)
Pettersson (4.05) - Marino (.925)
Ryan (1.5) - Lyabushkin (1.75)
Jarry (3)
DeSmith (1.25)
Kühnhackl (.8)
Del Zotto (.7)
