Contract is just fine for the next 2-3 years but the last couple of years when he is in his mid 30's and likely a 60-65 point player will be kind of rough with an 11.6 cap hit

Panarin is very good, top 10 in the league. But is he top 2? I don't think so. Of course by that standard, all the big 4 are overpaid. Personally. I wouldn't do this deal from either teams side.

Seriously though, the Rangers would jump on Matthews if they had the chance. An American star who scores goals: he would be a gold mine in terms of advertisement and TV contracts. Even the league would secretly support the trade. Not that the Rangers need money, but people always want more of that.

That doesn't mean he won't still be a good player, just he won't be one of the top point.producers in the league anymore even though he will be paid like it.

Matthews and Marner could very well be better than Zibanijad and Panarin next year, because that's how aging curves work. When Panarin was 22 and 23 like Marner and Matthews, he was still over in the KHL and didnt have any 40 goal or ppg NHL seasons (he's never done the first and didnt do the 2nd until he was 26), Zibanijad literally just had his first of both at 27.
You want to argue that they could win the cup THIS year easier with both? sure, but next year it's gonna look much different.
