There's no "Fair" here. Hamilton was the best D man in Hockey last year. Pesce doesn't hold the value Rielly does, because Rielly basically is as good offensively as Pesce is defensively, and defence isn't worth a lot in this league. The idea is nice, but there's no real package where this works without one team giving up WAY more than it should do.

I think it can make sense with some retention if we agree that: 1) Sandin will be ready to be top 4 LHD when Rielly reaches UFA; 2) Rielly will likely walk to Vancouver to replace Edler in 2 years anyway; 3) the swap fixes the "right-handedness" problem and improves balance, if only for a year; and 4) there are better chances of Hamilton re-signing in Toronto given that he is a local.

I am not a fan of Nylander on his off wing I just don't think him or Kap play it well enough to justify the switch. Rielly for Hamilton I don't hate the idea of on a quality basis and I don't think either team is far off. However, I think for leadership qualities I think removing Rielly or Hamilton would be a mistake (unless there is something we don't know about obviously).

That's 2 years of Rielly for one of Hamilton. That extra year is worth something.
