2020 lineup - Yzerman going young

Créé par: TMarch
Équipe: 2020-21 Red Wings de Detroit

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
No cap raise, no CBO, $60.2mm cap floor. #2OA pick.

Abdelkader buried. Seider graduates, Rasmussen graduates, Byfield graduates (and is protected in his first year a la Larkin). Veleno graduates after the TDL (would love to see him dominate at GR, and then move immediately into the 2/3C role).

Talbot signed as a UFA. Fil, Helm and Glendening are TDL candidates (with most of their contracts gone, I'm willing to wager DET getting 4th rounders for each). Nemeth could be a TDL candidate (and would probably return a 3rd rd pick), but he didn't perform too poorly in 2019-2020, and could be a candidate to return (outside of McIsaac and Cholowski, not many close to ready LHD in the system).

Also remember that the Expansion draft is at the end of the 2021 season. Seider, Zadina, Byfield, Petruzelli, Larsson, McIsaac all exempt.

Ridiculous contract for Bert and almost no way Byfield is ready for the NHL next year.

I think that's about right for Bert. I agree Byfield will need a year or 2.

If anything, it's a touch low for Bert. EW has a 5 year deal coming in at 5.8 mil.

I think keeping Nemeth will benefit Detroit next season. He is a stay at home defenseman and responsible in the D zone we are going to have a lot of young defensemen is and out of the lineup next season and regardless of talent young defenseman make mistakes. That's my opinion at least.

I love how people say "Bert isn't worth that much", but have nothing to back it up with. Let me steal a breakdown I've posted previously (you can see that conversation here: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/322560&post_id=1379000):

Player A is 26 years old, and since 2016-2017 has played in 291 games, scored 138 points, for a .47PPG average.
Player B is 25 years old, and since 2016-2017 has played in 199 games, scored 119 points, for a .60PPG average.
Player C is 24 years old, and since 2016-2017 has played in 249 games, scored 150 points, for a .60PPG average.

Player A is Tom Wilson, he of the 6 year, 5.166m/year contract, 6.5% cap hit
Player B is Tyler Bertuzzi, who you just gave a 3 year, 4.5mm/year contract to, which is a 5.5% cap hit.
Player C is Nick Schmaltz, he of the 7 year, 5.85m/year contract, 7.36% cap hit

Bert should get about a 6.75-7% cap hit contract, which would put him around 5.5mm/year.

You can make the argument that is a touch low. I think the lack of a cap move for 2020-2021 is going to depress contract prices slightly. I've put Bert at 5.75/year in the past, but I'm thinking it may be more 5.5 now. This year's FA period is going to be pretty interesting.

I agree with Mantha out and AA underperforming he stepped up big time and took some of the load off of Larkin.

I don't think it's terribly low, I think it's in the good range. 5 is too low, 6 is too high, anything from 5.3 -> 5.8 is solid.

Nemeth will never have flashy counting stats, but his advanced numbers show that he's got value as a #4 dman (and a veteran presence next to a growing Seider). He had a positive Corsi this year (1.6 relative) while playing a 40/60 Ozone/Dzone split (if you split adjust those are great numbers really). The on ice shooting percentage was very sustainable (9.1%, which is slightly below league average, so he should be able to maintain that), while his on ice save percentage was one of the best on the team (which shows to his defensive positioning). He will never contribute offensively, but he is a stable presence next to a more offensively inclined player to balance things out (a little bit of Brad Stuart).

One of my favorite D parings was Kronwall and Sturat. It's like they were trying to out hit each other every shift.

You can make any ridiculous comparable argument you like. That's an absurd number for Bert, who is really more of a 3rd line type player. Unless the cap goes way up he shouldn't sniff $5.5M per year.

Comparing him to WIlson is lol funny

His agent is going to compare him exactly that way, along with any arbitrator or mediator. That is how it works. If he goes to arbitration right now, his floor will be Tom Wilson (he wouldn't earn less than that), and with his stats better than Wilson on every level, he'll likely earn way more than Wilson via arbitration. What doesn't work is "fans" that don't know the game making judges on player values.

I can compare him to 15 more players in his age range and situation, and all make more than Wilson, and he's equally in line or better in counting stats and advanced metrics. Numbers matter, fair weather fans don't.
